QUESTION: Is it possible to make homes on Pluto if Earth ever proves unlivable? ANSWER from Marc Buie on May 26, 1996: I think people are clever enough to build homes just about anywhere, even Pluto. Right now the hard part seems to be getting people to these other places. Despite that, there isn't any place in our solar system that is as nice a place to live than the Earth. Sure, there'd be spectacular scenery and lots of neat things to explore, but living any where else would be a challenge. Every where else we could go would require a great deal of technology just to survive. Just keeping warm (on Pluto) or cool (on Venus) would require a power source (like electricity) that would NEVER fail. If your power got knocked out for a day, you'd freeze (or fry). We really need to keep on exploring and pushing out beyond Earth but we'd be wise to take care of this planet. It may be a long, long time before we find another one like it.
