Los Alamos NewsLetter to be distributed this week

July 6, 2005

The biweekly hard-copy Los Alamos NewsLetter for the week of July 4 is scheduled to be in mailboxes and newsstands this week.

Like Alice following the white rabbit down a hole into a bizarre, peculiar wonderland, where "nothing is as it seems," study of the quantum world invokes a feeling of bewilderment in many of those who dare to tread its seemingly ambiguous path. To Lab physicist Wojciech Zurek of the Theoretical (T) Division and his team of students, however, it makes perfect sense. Read about this on Page 1.

On Page 2, Laboratory Director Robert Kuckuck discusses his observations during his first few weeks as Laboratory director and his three initial priorities for Los Alamos.

As part of a series of informative briefs relating to technology transfer, an article on cooperative research and development agreements can be found on Page 3. Also on Page 3 is a message from Chief Science Officer Tom Bowles on the Science Council - what it is and what its members are doing.

Page 4 contains an announcement about the annual student symposium scheduled for Aug. 2-3 and an article about the new student mentoring policy.

Laboratory Director Kuckuck recently talked with students at a meeting in the Duane Smith Auditorium at Los Alamos High School. Read about his visit with students on Page 5.

Newsmakers, the Los Alamos NewsLetter's feedback feature called "So … what do you think?" and more can be found on pages 6 and 7.

This week's spotlight on Page 8 features Sebastien Dartevelle, a postdoctorate in Geophysics (EES-11), who volunteers much of his time to the Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) program for abused and neglected children placed in foster care.

Employees can access the Los Alamos NewsLetter at http://www.lanl.gov/news/newsletter/lanl_archive.shtml online or obtain additional copies at the bright blue distribution boxes throughout the Lab. Organizations receiving too many or not enough should call the mailroom at 7-4166. If your organization's administrator is not putting the newsletter in your mailboxes, please encourage him or her to do so.
