Wolf Prey Base Studies in Olympic National Park, Washington: Columbian Black-Tailed Deer (Odocoileus hemionus columbianus) Radio Telemetry Data Set: 1998
- Geospatial_Data_Presentation_Form: spreadsheet
- Description:
-
- Abstract:
-
Eleven black-tailed deer were tracked using radio telemetry from Feb-May 1998. The data set includes information on the location of radio-collared deer, characteristics of surrounding habitat and vegetation, sex and age composition of additional deer present and behavior of deer during each observation.
- Purpose:
-
We studied distribution of black-tailed deer to delineate seasonal winter ranges, identify relationships of wintering distribution to winter severity and identify important habitat variables. That information was used to evaluate field methods within Olympic National Park for estimating and monitoring black-tailed deer population.

All field crew were trained in all data recording procedures. Two field biologists worked together to verify each other’s work. The data were reviewed once more at time of computerized data entry. The computer data files were verified against the original field forms by two observers after data entry. All locational data determined using a Geographic Positioning System were compared to a gridded USGS 1:24,000-scale topographic map. Upon finding any error in the GPS unit it was re-calibrated. When recording elevation, the crew utilized an altimeter that had been calibrated at a known elevation. The elevations were always double-checked by referencing the USGS topography maps. Compasses were also relied upon heavily for navigation and assessment that the crew was in the correct location.

Adult female deer were captured and radio-collared in the Elwha study site, between 5-13 February 1998. Each deer was fitted with a 600g radio-transmitter collar containing a motion-sensitive activity switch and mortality sensor.
We located each radio-collared deer about 1-4 times weekly from 23 February-19 May 1998 by radio-tracking them from the ground during daylight hours. We attempted to confirm all locations visually, however, occasionally we estimated locations based on familiarity with signal strength characteristics and terrain. Whenever accuracy of locations was not confirmed visually, accuracy was estimated as <100 m (Class 1), 100-500m (Class 2), or >500m (Class 3) based on experience with signal characteristics. All Class 3 observations were excluded from further analyses. Visual and Class 1 observations were used for analyses of habitat selection and daily movements, Class 2 observations were included in home range analyses.
For all visual sightings, locations and activity of deer as well as vegetation and topographic characteristics of habitats were recorded. Locations were recorded as Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) coordinates determined from a GPS (Rockwell PLGR, Rockwell International, Cedar Rapids, IA) or using a gridded USGS 1:24,000-scale topographic map. For estimated locations, vegetation types were determined from GIS vegetation maps, no attempt to determine slope characteristics or percent canopy cover were made.
