Description/Abstract The tables given are based on an investigation of American petroleum oils carried out by the National Bureau of Standards, and the arrangement is largely according to the recommendations of a committee appointed by the American Petroleum Institute to represent the petroleum industry.^In order to overcome the confusion that has existed in the petroleum-oil industry by reason of the use of two so-called Baume scales for light liquids, the American Petroleum Institute, the U. S. Bureau of Mines, and the National Bureau of Standards, in December 1921, agreed to recommend that in the future only the scale based on the modulus 141.5 be used in the petroleum-oil industry, and that it be known as the A. P. I. scale.^The relation of degrees A. P. I. to specific gravity is expressed by the formula.
