USAID Inaugurates Day Care Center for the Elderly in Kfar Joz

June 9, 2006

United States Agency for International Development (USAID)/Lebanon Mission Director Raouf Youssef inaugurated a day care center for the elderly in Kfar Joz on June 9, 2006. Located in Kfar Joz in Nabatiyeh, the Multaqa Al Ajial (Reunion of Generations) day care center has been established with funding from the United States Agency for International Development – USAID for $50,000. The Women Progress Association in South Lebanon, a local organization dedicated to providing medical and social assistance to needy people in South Lebanon, received the funds to furnish the center.

The Multaqa Al Ajial center accommodates up to 25 elderly persons per month from Kfar Joz and the surrounding villages, to receive full day care under the supervision of professional staff. The center provides health, supportive and social services to the elderly population in a protected environment during day time hours, to enable them to maintain a senior level of independence, improve their health condition and remain in their communities.

USAID’s assistance to the Women Progress Association in South Lebanon in the amount of $50,000 helped furnish the center with medical supportive equipment such as wheelchairs and special cushions, items for the kitchen and the administration, audio-visual materials, infirmary room furniture and first aid kit.

This donation underscores the compassion of the American people, and their conviction that every person is unique and valuable. As President Bush said in his 2006 State of the Union address, “For people everywhere, the United States is a partner for a better life.”

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has worked in Lebanon since 1951, funding development projects to benefit Lebanese citizens. USAID’s program promotes economic opportunities, job creation, good governance and environmental policies and practices in rural Lebanon. USAID provides $40 million assistance a year and works in partnership with U.S. and Lebanese organizations throughout the country. USAID strengthens the relationship between the people of Lebanon and the people of the United States, and promotes a shared vision of democracy and socio-economic development.
