Tour of the Searchable FDA Seafood List

The Seafood List (SL) is an On-line searchable version of the printed FDA Seafood List. It contains nomenclature information for almost 1500 species of finfish and shellfish, including the Latin Scientific Name, the Market Name (that FDA allows for the mareting of seafood), the (generally accepted Common Name, or any of the Vernacular or Regional Names that may be associated with the species. *Sea food Logo* The direct link for the Search Page is:

It may also be accessed from the Seafood section of the CFSAN

Food & Consumer Information Page

or from the

Regulatory Fish Encyclopedia (RFE)

The SL has provisions for forms-enabled browsers (such as NetScape or Microsoft Internet Explorer) or for Non-forms browsers (such as Lynx). Search terms of one word or a contiguous string may be entered (the search terms are not case sensitive). Once you have entered a search term, click on the SEND button (or tab to the SEND button and hit ENTER). The results will be retuned to your browser in the form of an HTML (hypertext) file. The RFE Team is also developing improved resources to supplement this search engine or future search engines for seafood list. These will provide additional information on nomenclature from non-SL sources as well as grouping by Order-Family-Genus.

An experimental version of an enhanced Seafood List (1170 species of finfish):

NOTE: These are both very large files and may take 2-3 minutes to load with a fast connection and longer from a dial-up connection.

roughy Note that this gives results for any Seafood List Entry containing the term: roughy in the Scientific Name, the Market Name, the Common Name, or any of the Vernacular or Regional Names.

(The first 'hit' has only the word: rough; this is superfluous information and is caused by an 'unsophistocated' search engine that will be replaced - not all searches are perfect.)

Note that the search results contain an active hyperlink to the information for species that are included in the RFE.
