Officials Lauds Work of RFE Breastfeeding Center
On July 18, First Deputy Chairman of the Russian Federation Dmitry Medvedev led a high-level delegation including Russian Far East (RFE) Plenipotentiary Representative Kamil Ishakov, Presidential Assistant Alexander Beglov, and Sakhalin Governor Ivan Malakhov on a visit to Sakhalin’s Children’s Polyclinic at Municipal Hospital #2 as part of his trip to assess progress in implementing National Projects in the RFE. Polyclinic #2 participates in the Healthcare National Project and, since 2002, has been cooperating with USAID’s US-RFE Partnership Program to manage grants that support health fairs, encourage breastfeeding and provide maternal and infant training and community education.
On the visit, the delegation learned about the Modern Vaccine Ward and the Breast-Feeding Support Center. The main goal of the Center is to increase the practice of breastfeeding and public knowledge of its health benefits through publications, media, and community events. The delegation expressed great interest in the work and Mr. Medvedev emphasized the importance of the Center’s activity in light of Russia’s demographic problem.
