STEP Project Meets in Scotland

The STEP program sponsored an International Symposium on Testing the Equivalence Principle in Space at Ross Priory, Loch Lomond, Scotland, on September 4-7, 2000. The symposium was well attended and highly successful in bringing together some of the world's experts in experimental gravitation. The symposium was followed by a study team meeting with representatives of the US and European institutions involved in STEP. Solutions to a number of long-standing technical issues were discussed, including aerogel helium constraint, and a novel method for measuring moment of inertia differences for the STEP test masses. The success of the meeting was much enhanced on the last day by the news that STEP had been selected for a SMEX phase A study.
