Abstract:

This data represents grazing allotment boundaries managed by the BLM. Allotments are permitted use areas for public grazing of cattle, sheep and horses. Allotments can be a mixture of different surface ownerships, for example a BLM allotment can encompass privately owned land or state land Allotments can also be leased to various types of livestock, cattle, sheep and/or horses.

Purpose:

The purpose of the data is to help facilitate record keeping and on-the-ground management including grazing bills, allotment monitoring, allotment inventory and use supervision. Allotment boundaries are defined by fencelines, which commonly are the only human-made reference on the ground. The rangeland management program determines the appropriate number of animal use months (AUM's) permitted on each allotment based on its acreage and range condition. Grazing permittees pay the BLM for the number of AUM's that graze the allotment each year.

These data are believed to be logically consistent, though no tests were performed. Polygon geometry is topologically clean. RMS error was assumed to be under .009 but not documented with an exact number.

Range Allotments drawn on mylar were digitized in the Wyoming BLM State Office - Cheyenne. The mylars digitized were at 1:100,000 scale and covered the entire field office. Four tic locations registered the overlays and RMS is assumed to be under 0.009. Any lines that followed ownership, landlines, etc. were snapped to GCDB control points if possible.
