Some of the larger debris, such as tires or even TV sets, are caught by grates at the pumping stations and removed, but the vast majority of the debris and contaminants winds up in Lake Pontchartrain.Runoff problems are made worse by the widespread practice of dumping motor oil, paint, and other household chemicals down storm drains. The Foundation has worked, with success, to spread to the word that chemicals dumped down storm drains wind up in Lake Pontchartrain.

"../../../images/slides/challeng/stormtrt.jpg" The Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation has worked to develop technologies to cleanse storm water before it enters the lake. One method is to use constructed wetland treatment systems, as depicted in this slide.
