Kennedy Space
Center leads the world in preparing and launching missions into
orbit around Earth and beyond. With its unique facilities,
Kennedy is unsurpassed in processing and launching spacecraft
that have explored and studied Earth, the Moon, the planets in
our solar system, and the farthest boundaries of our universe.
As the starting point for all U.S. human space flights, the
Center’s highly visible and exciting missions always draw
worldwide attention.
Kennedy is
NASA’s Center of Excellence for launch and payload processing
systems and also serves as NASA’s Lead Center for
acquisition/management of expendable launch vehicles services
and payload carriers, payload processing, and support. Kennedy
is responsible for the checkout, launch, and landing of the
Space Shuttle and its payloads. Elements of the International
Space Station undergo final flight preparations at Kennedy
before being launched aboard the Shuttle for on-orbit assembly.
The Center’s personnel also provide management and technical
expertise for the launch of NASA unscrewed missions from
adjacent Cape Canaveral Air Station and Vandenberg Air Force
Base in California.
Kennedy’s
achievements have fired the imaginations of people worldwide,
but they are only a beginning in our exploration of space. As
NASA proceeds toward the commercialization of the Space Shuttle
and related technologies, Kennedy continues to focus on
cutting-edge engineering that helps meet the Agency’s objectives
and customers’ needs for faster, better, and cheaper development
and operations of space systems.
Home to
approximately 1,800 civil servants, Kennedy Space Center is in
Brevard County, Florida, approximately 45 miles east of
Orlando. The area around Kennedy is known as Florida’s Space
Coast and is a popular tourist destination.
