The images below compare the lightning strikes on the left with a radar overlay at about the same time. The image on the left is actually a 1-hour plot of cloud-to-ground strikes ending at 5:00 PM from the the national lightning detection system. Note: these are only cloud-to-ground strokes. There were doubtless many more in-cloud strikes, verified with the excellent observations taken by a dedicated snow-spotter shown in the table below the image. On the right you can see a reflectivity image off the Buffalo radar at 5:00 PM. This was one of the most convectively active lake effect bands in many years! |
