James F. King is a Senior Research Welding Engineer in the Metals and Ceramic Division’s Materials Joining and Nondestructive Testing Group at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. His 31 years work experience as a research and development welding engineer includes 6 years at the Oak Ridge Y-12 Plant and 25 years at ORNL. He graduated from the Ohio State University with a degree in Welding Engineering and did graduate work at the University of Tennessee in Metallurgical Engineering and Industrial Management. His research extends from basic analysis of welding processes and process development, materials weldability assessment, filler metal development and properties characterization to applied technologies for a wide variety of systems. These include: development and fabrication of nuclear devices; nuclear reactor materials and joining process development applicable to High Temperature Gas Cooled Reactors, Liquid Metal Breeder Reactors, Fusion Reactors, and Radioisotopic Power Systems; dissimilar materials joining, fossil energy materials development and fabrication; refractory alloys for space nuclear power applications; nuclear submarine propulsor fabrication; and interpretation and application of codes and specifications such as ASME, AWS, and Military Standards. This work has utilized a wide variety of joining processes including most of the conventional arc welding processes, friction welding, resistance welding, brazing, and the high energy density processes electron beam and laser beam.
