The Daily Press: Webb pledges assistance in recovery

WASHINGTON - Virginia Sen. Jim Webb sent staff to investigate the damage of Monday's tornado and promised to ensure that the federal government provides whatever aid is appropriate.

"We're doing everything we can to make sure the rigth assistance is on the ground," Webb said in a brief interview.

In a later statement issued by his office, Webb said he has communicated with the governor's office, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, congressional colleagues and local officials to coordinate on recovery efforts.

"We want to make sure that our response is coordinated, effective and rapid," Webb said. "Equally important, we want to make sure that those who are bringing government assistance stay on the ground until the recovery is complete."

Sen. John Warner, R-Va., said he dispatched on aide from his Norfolk district office to accompany Gov. Timothy M. Kaine on a tour of the damaged areas of Suffolk today.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with those whose lives and communities have been so terribly affected," Warner said in a statement. "Virginians have a long tradition of answering the call to duty and I am certain that the entire commonwealth will answer the call to help fellow citizens in the difficult and challenging recovery and rebuilding process that is before us."
