Sen. Landrieu Secures Millions for Highways, Canal Streetcar Project, Park

Washington, D.C. – The Canal Streetcar project and upgrades to major South Louisiana roadways were on the list of priorities this week for the Senate Appropriations Committee. U.S. Sen. Mary Landrieu and her colleagues on the committee approved language for fiscal year 2004 appropriations that includes $36 million for the Canal Street Streetcar Project.

"The Canal Streetcar is a symbol of our state's rich heritage and New Orleans' eclectic character," Sen. Landrieu said. "This is a project that enriches our city, and I am proud the Senate Appropriations Committee recognized its tremendous value."

The committee also included $3.5 million for the continuation of Interstate 49 south from Lafayette and $2 million for improvements to Louisiana Highway 1.

"Although few Americans probably realize it, LA 1 is vitally important. It is a lifeline and supply line that keeps the Gulf of Mexico oil rigs pumping. Without it, our oil and gas industry would be seriously crippled," Sen. Landrieu said. "Meanwhile, extending I-49 to the south will extend our transportation infrastructure, and benefit those who depend on the interstate for both business and pleasure."

In addition, the committee agreed to $1.6 million for the City of Westwego's Wetlands Harbor Activities Recreational Facility (WHARF) project. When complete, this will be a multi-use recreational facility that would allow people of all physical capabilities recreational and scenic access to Louisiana's wetlands. It will include cabins, fishing docks, boat launches and other recreational and athletic facilities.

"Louisiana's wetlands are truly one of our greatest treasures – and they are something every Louisianian should be able to experience and enjoy," Sen. Landrieu said. "This project will provide an opportunity for all citizens to participate in the great outdoors that our state is known for."

The appropriations legislation will now go to the full Senate for approval.
