Preface

In offering these lectures to the public it is through a feeling of regard to those who love liberty, freedom and equality the book is nothing like the one first proposed but it is on the same subject and told in a much better and quicker manner too much now is in print in this class. In book form and not in lectures as it should be. These lectures in this book should be read by and with a good mind to reason and to think and to judge what our future may be. Without a doubt these lectures will be read extensively and it is hoped that the words expressed will be remembered and appreciated by all thoughtful and intelligent people as it is designed.

ELOQUENCE, LOGIC, WISDOMTHEFUTURE--OF THECOLORED RACE,

As Delivered at Indianapolis, April 16, 1885, at Olive Baptist Church.

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN: The future of the colored race is a subject vast, grand, and an important one, but without complication in a degree to effect her movements. What shall her future be? as a race. As old as any, we challenge the history of any nation to furnish a parallel, when history is properly reported. All were once in the same evolutionary condition. We may look back to the soil upon which we first inhabited we find that genius had taken its first step in evolution there Nations come and go, powers rise and fall. "the last shall be first and the first shall be last." She went down by the law of the great creator but "these bones shall rise again." We are growing to be a race more and and more distinguished in virtue, education and other attainments, a race aided and sympathized with by all Christianity, and by the great Supreme being, will gain too much patriotism, national virtue and strength of character to be disturbed by corruption, egotism, prejudice, and internal wickedness. Justice comes, but rather from the furnace, fire and crucifixion. When thus emerged from the thraldom of darkness in which he has fallen the brighter her history, morally, politically, socially, religiously and intellectually, I mean the masses, not those who are stumbling blocks, in the way of evolution, but those who have walked out in the paths of evolution. Intelligent people. whether Christian, or no are thoughtful about the closing of one volume of time and opening of another, the quietness of heavenly wisdom, and inflexible willingness to obey present duty should be always before us in our daily walks. Duty is the sublimest word in our language. You cannot do more. The heart should not, be in us to do less. We read in the common history of the world how God created man and woman and they were call Adam and Eve. These two committed a gross sin which generations from them to the present time, 00042of law, they were told even after their sin that they could be saved and to be fruitful and multiply. The inmost part followed and are still following. Adam and Eve had children. They settled in different parts of the world and in different climates. They rose to mighty nations and generations, but where are they all? Dead. Their great works will live to eternity. The grave holds scores of nations and sceptors. You go into Africa you will see there different tribes of humanity--English, French, German and nearly all races of mankind just as in other countries. and their color differs there as in other parts of the world. Heathen are not only there but in other countries as well. The first colored person landed upon American soil in 1620, and placed in servitude by a Dutch trader and slave trade grew from this and continued to thrive in England's colony for a space of time and the colored man remained in bondage for two hundred and forty-three years. Until the year 1863. Although a few colored men were given their liberty in the year 1812 for their services rendered the government in that war. The colored man's blood was the first to flow for the defense, protection and independence of this country and during the war of '61 the colored man did his duty as a soldier for this great and glorious country.

The colored race has been making an honest endeavor to better his condition. He has demonstrated that he possesses excellent parts none but the most bigotted will deny. Hostilities heretofore faced him on every hand. A prejudice long as life weighed and crushed him down. Bitter animosities and unrelenting hatred cursed him. With all of his disadvantages he has proven to the world that he is a man worthy of being treated as other citizens. God created all and he knows man by his color. He has an honest and sincere interest in the upbuilding of all that is righteous and laudable in this progressive world and he despises all that tend to degrade the title of a good citizen. Many professions to-day are filled by colored men of ability. Our factors of divinity will complete with the average; professors of colleges, teachers of known ability, editors recognized as competitors with ether nations, correspondents of great journals, merchants whose business is good and in trades he is advancing. There are some few skilled mechanics we can point out with pride, and that he is capable of high attainments, the evidence is indisputable. Knowledge of things are acquired. One can learn as another if he be not an extreme idiot. The forced ignorance of trades will be met and overcome; the world moves and the colored race is moving with it it. We have representatives in the state and national legislative halls battling not only for his respective race but for all other interests under the protection of this united republic. There are about seven million and a half of colored people in the United States, two thirds of whom are in the Southern States. This race has increased [?] thin the last decade and is still on the increase, [?] the difficulties it must face. We give credit [?] is due for our advancement in life. Credit [?] their knowledge and wealth and with kindness 00053share with the needy and ignorant, whether the ignorant and needy ones are white or black is no concern. Kindness, sobriety, manfulness, courage, morality, intelligence, religion and duty marks her destiny.

MORTALITY OF OUR RACE

One M.D., in speaking of the mortality of our race in the South said "as compared with the white race that the colored race appears to enjoy an advantage in malarial fevers and cancerous diseases, while it is at a disadvantage in all other diseases." Malarial fevers and cancerous diseases constitute a great, if not the greatest, of the constitutional growth of all diseases. Then, if that is true, the very foundation of disease is less apparent in the colored race. There was a table exhibited in The Popular Science Monthly for the year 1881, showing an increase during the decade, including the war, fell off by sixty per cent. This is very natural. At that time when he was called to war with the enemy and, I should think that other races showed a falling off in the increase as heretofore. The rate was brought up to near its highest figures in the returns of the last census. The doctor held the last fact of corroborate the belief that tho African race is destined to disappear in the struggle for existence. If the rapid increase of the colored race proves anything it is that there is plenty of room yet for that class of people. This leads to the consideration of what will properly be the future of the colored race. When they are crowded upon, may be the capacity of the race for development is a state of peace. It is apparent from the great check on their increase between 1860 and 1870, by the operations of the civil war, that any serious disturbance of their industrial pursuits like a prolonged foreign war or political convulsion at home would produce such distress as to disturb profoundly their vital movements. A prolonged foreign war and a political convulsion at home would disturb the progress of all nations engaged therein and not only one set of people unless one nation only was engaged in the war. The whole colored race, body and soul, was engaged in the late civil war. Those who did not serve on the field were at home praying to God for success, and had more at stake than all other races together.

There is no danger of the encroachmdent of one race upon the grounds of the other. There is room for all. We can communicate with one another with such friendship as to command respect from all sides, and death only can interfere as the act of God. All commanding positions, that the colored race may get it, will be won by sheer force of merit. There is no race on earth who believe more firmly in[?]than the colored race. There is where a great good [?][?] accomplished solely and simply in obedience an [?] may it forever remain so. The race will now [?] the other.

00064
EMIGRATION.

A rolling stone, they tell me, gathers no moss. The subject of immigration is of a very small consequence, in which a few only are concerned. If we were to immigrate to the territories we would only create enmity with other races of man, greater than Christians could bear. Within the jurisdiction of other states and governed by them and the same national laws we would be at a disadvantage to obtain wealth and could not compete with other nations in an attempt to be strong and prosperous. The strong would overpower the weak. The colored man should inhabit the soil upon which his blood was given for liberty. There is no war on record that the colored race did not figure in the interest and behalf of this nation. The colored man should be proud of his record, for it is of no small consequence. Wherever we are we shall live in peace and harmony with all the world, and as we judge the future by the past and present, we can predict a bright future for the colored race, with a showing in history as grand as the greatest nation, living or dead. There has been a great deal of idle talk about the future of the colored race, and placing a worthy race of man in a false and untruthful light. He who attempts to falsify the true status of the colored race does so with a view at facts that argue nothing. Read the history of races from the beginning of the world and you will find that the colored race makes a very good showing in progress.

FAULTS OF OUR RACE.

While we have been looking at the bright side, it is well notice our faults as we go along. All races of man have their faults. There are more faults and backsets accredited to the colored race because they have been taught to shun the truth in a certain degree during their days of servitude. This was done in order to keep them from the bright side of the question. Of course no one political party is responsible for this because it was a vicious sentiment of the times, upheld by all parties at that particular time, until it was seen to be an advantage to all to change and then and there the sentiment of the times had taken a brighter view of the situation. What intelligent man will deny this? When we dispell the bitter animosities and hatred toward our fellow man and organize, our hearts and the love of friendship into one common bond of brotherhood, and diffuse good ideas and abolish malice in ourselves, and unite upon good things; then ere long we will reach the round in that ladder accredited to generations of man gone on before us. I do sincerely believe that we are slowly but surely becoming sensible to the teachings of modern times. Notwithstanding our previous con [?] servitude. We as a race in America, are only [?] cars old in freedom, liberty and equality. We [?] too much in our ranks and towards our [?] 00075All races are scrutinized carefully up to the present time and you will find that the colored race has been just as sincere and obedient as any race of man. You will find that the progress that he has made will compare favorably with any other known to history. He has made a wonderful progress, the brightness of which becomes greater and grander than before, You saw the dark, dreary and dismal past die. Its remains are now withering away, and in its stead, liberty reigns supreme. The future of the colored race, grows brighter and brighter still. A continuance in the road as painted in the past and present, there is nothing to prevent a history, a record which will show that the colored race arrived at the highest standard in honor, science, and all other attainments of the earth's greatness known to humanity. [Applause-]

The good may be partially dead for the present in some directions, but it will surely be resurrected. You have often heard these things and know what I have said and know that more could be said. If the popular tendencies are not for good, we can look for a certain fulfillment of the holy writ, which is not far in the distance. If you are a counterfeiter, you had better be careful or you will miss the smallest parts of a true Pain. A lie has wings to be clipped at the first opportunity; truth continues to expand in spite of clippers, he who uses clippers and talks much ill of his neighbor tells many tales, but if you speak in plain words you would call it many lies, so you see that if you desire to build an enviable reputation in your community, spread yourself, and tell all the ill of your neighbor possible. One can not reach the depth of the human mind, but enough can be obtained from actions, habits, surroundings, and the conduct to satisfy one's own conception or estimate of the individual, but too often the person in a lower state places an estimate on an individual that he can not reach by his feeble intellect, but endeavors to degrade his superiors. Mark you, when judgment day comes somebody will be asleep. In the language of Whittier, "Evermore restrain evil and cherish good, so shall there be another and a happier life for thee." [Prolonged applause.]

Before you give any credit to a great or small story told to you of your neighbor, which looks upon its face to be false, you should consider what position in life or standing from a moral or virtuous point of view the tale bearer holds. When you do consider this in this way you will find that stories and lies circulated falls from the lips of those who are of the lowest grade of humanity. The person who dislikes you for some cause will show that he is inimieable to you by circulating lies and falsehoods about you. Here are words of wisdom: "Never believe, much less propagate, an ill report of a neighbor without good evidence of its truth. Never list infamous story handed to you by a man who is injure person defamed or who is himself apt to defame [?????????????] or who is wont to sow discord among brethren [???????????] disturbance 00086in society. Never speak evil of another while you are under the influence of envy or malevolence but wait till your spirits are cooled down, that you may better judge whether to utter or suppress the matter." I speak of this because it is a matter we all ought to take into consideration. We ought to adhere to these facts in this enlightened and progressive world. I never heard of a falsehood in my life that did not prove for its author a slanderer, or a rascal.

WE ARE NOT NEGROES.

The question is often asked "are we negroes," and too often answered in the affirmative. I do not disagree with those who answer in the affirmative, simply because one can dispute another, but from facts as they present themselves, forces me to say and believe that we are not negroes. We will first consider in a brief way how the word negro came into prominence and now being upheld by a few. If one would turn their attention back to the formation of words, as it is well-known that the human race was not born a talking, but rather in its infancy acquired the formation of words by degrees, they will see that the word negro was not used in the most ancient times, but since the world has become so populated that the word become so prominently before the public view. The colored race was first known as Africans and distinguished from one another by the country in Africa which they inhabited. Whether Egyptians or Soudans they were known by names, just the same as those who come from or are now in Europe. They say, unintelligently at times, that there is nothing in a name, but that expression ought to be regarded as slang rather than proper language, to be spoken by any one. The greatest and the smallest things on the face of the globe are known by their names in order that the one may be distinguished from the other but a fostered name as that of the negro, does more to degrade one socially, politically, religiously and otherwise than any other foul name thrust upon the colored man. The German is known only as a German because he came from Germany; he is a European because Germany is in Europe; he is a Caucassian because he is white. He is known by no other name. Other European nations might be mentioned but the German is sufficient for this purpose, so he is known only by three different titles, that being the German, Caucassian and the European. Now how many names is the colored race known by? First, he is known as an African; second, Soudan or whatever county in Africa he came from; third, he is known as a negro; fourth he is known as a nigger; fifth, a black race; sixth, the sons of Ham.

It can be readily seen that the colored man has two or three more names to distinguish himself by than the Caucassian. Some of them must be fostered, for he is not entitled to all of them if you choose to add one more name to the Caucassian [?????????] Then the colored man would have two more names [??????????] than the whites do, but the two most [?????????] he words negro and nigger, which were thrust[????????????????] at signs of reflection to belittle and to degrade 00097him. Some of our noted explorers of Africa tells us that the genuine negro comes from the interior of Central Africa. Now this is no admission that they are not all wholly negroes, and also that some of them are not negroes.

Now before one can truthfully say that all or any of the colored race are negroes, they must prove conclusively that all come from the interior or Central Africa. Can any one here say what part of Africa that his forefather came from? in order that he may be termed a negro? The Egyptians are not negroes and no one ever claimed it, although they are Africans. Because you are an African that is no proof that you are a negro. Even if you were to admit that the negroes are in Central Africa, you do not know whether your forefathers settled in Central Africa or no, and I challenge any man to deny it, but by speaking of the explorers views of the people of Africa, I do not admit that there are negroes in Central Africa, because they are like the German or any other nation, they are known by the country they live in, while in Africa or Europe. They say that you are a negro and niger because you are black. That is no argument whatever in favor of it, because all scientists will tell you that it is the effect of the climate on the human system which causes difference in color and conditions of mankind. Let any man go into the heart of Africa and remain there, if he can, and generation after generation will grow darker and darker. So his generations, if they are dark, will grow brighter and brighter when he lives in the cold climates. Noah had three sons, all were brothers, and it is claimed settled in different parts of the world.

Ham was one of his sons, and his blood, it is claimed, flows in the colored man's veins. Now if Ham was a negro or niger, why was not his other two brothers negroes or nigers, too? All come from the same father. They set about to people the world and they did it. But how Ham came to be a negro or niger, I do not know. I think that he was known as a Soudan if he settled there, and his other brother was known as a German if he settled in Germany, so if Ham was a negro or niger, so was all three brothers of them, because there could not be three sons, all born in the same country, one known as a negro or niger and the other a German, the third, a Russian, but all were the same at that time and are so yet. Some may say that because he went to Africa and became darker than he was. If he was brighter at all, we call him negro or niger. If this is so, then I pity all the German's French and other nationalities who may see cause to go to Africa to live, because as soon as they are six months old there, they will be known as negroes or nigers. I would not think that were a negro because you happened to settle in Africa. You ought to be known by the country in Africa you adopted as your home. Now what is the meaning of the words negro and niger? We are told by dictionary writers that the word negro means a black African or a descendent of one. Now that writer is just as liable to be mistaken as any one else, but the construction is too 00108broad, even if it was admitted to be the truth, because it would apply to all black people whether they were born in Central Africa or not, which contradicts the explorer's of Africa, and by saying in its meaning or "a descendent of one," would certainly carry the meaning of the word as given, clear back to the settlement of Africa, and to Ham, because the colored man is the descendent of Ham, therefore Ham, the son of Noah, would be a negro or niger from the beginning, but to-day if Ham was claimed to be a negro or niger any number of persons would rise to dispute it. The word niger is a latin word, and it also means black, it is derived from the word negro, or, in other words, the word negro is derived from the word niger. They both mean the same. The one is in the English tongue, the other latin, so the colored man can not be a negro without being also a niger. When you say negro you are speaking in the English tongue, and when you say niger you simply use the latin manner of speaking. It would be better to think that the words negro and niger as applied to the colored race come from the ignorant ages, when they advocated for a time that the colored man was a part animal and had shin bones peculiar to such. All such ideas have faded and are now dead with those ages. Let all such ignorance die with it. Rise and advance with the progressive age of to-day. By settling in Africa does not make a German and his descendants negroes, or nigers, no more than it made Ham and his descendants negroes or nigers. There are some people who dispute the Bible in a great degree, and will hang to that old dogma that the colored man has skin bones peculiar to animals, while the colored man is with them in claiming to be the highest animal type, so to speak. They, too, must share with the colored man in claiming a part of the skin bones peculiar to the lower animals. The greatest skeptic of modern times disagrees with them, while he does not believe the Bible as others claim that they do. No skeptic nor scientific reasoner will claim that because Ham or any other son of Noah happen to settle in Africa and become darker on the account of the climate he and his descendants then became negroes or nigers, but that he is now just the same as before he emigrated to Africa. He has only changed countries and that is all any one of us will admit, that Noah was the father of Ham, but who ever claimed that Noah was a negro or niger. If Ham was a negro or niger so was Noah, his father and the whole family. Ham and his descendants, it can readily be seen could not have been negroes or nigers, unless his whole kindred were negroes or nigers. There are different nations, but there is but one race, that being the human race. Different nations because of the countries they inhabit and known by. Supposing that the whole of Germany would emigrate to Africa, if such, a thing were possible would they all become negroes or nigers? Your answer would be no. Then would their descendants become negroes or niggers? Certainly not, for they would be of the German descent, and would still be Germans. The colored race is not molded into the Caucassian, nor the caucassian into it, but one is by decent just as much of the other as the sons of 00119Noah are of one another. One nation surpasses the other in intelligence and often times more powerful, and by that power can control the other. I have spoken of this to-night because I believe that the fostered names hinders the progress of the colored race in many respects but, nevertheless, the colored race in many respects, socially and otherwise, is marching on, and there is no power on earth to check her upward march. If the teaching of the bible and of science be true as to the origin of man, even accepting the teaching of Darwin to be true, upon that one point, however, they may differ theoretically. Man was not born white at the beginning or created so, but his change of color and condition was caused by the climate in which he lived. Supposing for the moment you would say that man was first created white, then I would like to ask you, was not Ham the son of Noah also white, if his brothers were, your answer must be in the affirmative. When we consider the subject from a moral standpoint and not taking into consideration vice and immorality which may enter the minds of a few, for in the days of Noah we have no history which tells us that there were negroes or nigers at that time, so you can readily see that the names are fostered, and ought to be rejected by us.

Now, according to history and the teachings of science, the Caucassian race was not always in the temperate zone, therefore he must have been in the torrid zone to avoid the deposit of ice which occurs in the temperate zone regular in twenty-one thousand years. Then, if he did at that time take up his abode in the torrid zone to avoid the catastrophe, what color was he after he remained there a number of years, and perhaps grown ignorant form the loss, or forgotten all their learning, and perhaps grown barbarous. From the effect the climate has upon the human system he must have changed his color and condition considerably while in the torrid zone, that is, if there was a torrid zone, previous to that calamity. If man escaped at all from that calamity, he certainly moved southward, and perhaps a number of them remained in the zone now called torrid, and become acclimated to that climate, and may be the same people now reduced to barbarism, with the exception of the few who perhaps returned to the temperate zone after the calamity had passed, then of course they would regain their natural colors that they were previous to the calamity, it is nothing more than natural that they would regain the lighter color, for the climate alone would make them so after a period of time. Man can relapse into a barbarous state from a higher condition much easier than he could attain that high condition of humanity. While the Caucassian nation has been making its progress in one direction, it has relapsed in the countries where it first flourished, into a state not much above that of the colored nations. In Egypt, Arabia, Persia, Mesopotamia and Syria and in some other countries the literature, science, and institutions of which they gave the first example, so said, are now nearly unknown, while the ruins of their works of art alone remain to attest their former greatness. Since history has been partially destroyed so to speak, could not the colored nations 001210have once attained the highest greatness attributed to humanity? It would be folly to say not. All the human family suffer the same relapsing calamity. The first shall be last and the last be first. It is continually progress and relapse in civilization of all nations as long as the world stands.

NAT TURNER'S INSURRECTION.

Uprising in Nottoway County, Va.As Delivered July 30, 1889.

Ladies and Gentlemen: It was in 1885 on the 16th day of April that I appeared before an appreciative and an intelligent audience in this house of worship. This evening I find no difference in the audience. I hope I will not detain you long on the subject "Nat Turner's Insurrection." In speaking on this subject it is necessary to mention something in respect of the history of the colored race, It was in 1620, when the colored man was first brought to the American soil, and from that day he began to work upon the plantations as a slave. He was not made a slave by any certain political party or creed, but by a cruel sentiment of the times, upheld by the vicious elements of nationalities. Of course he was expected to labor for his masters. For that purpose he was converted into a chattel, with all of its meaning and effect, But there was a sentiment against slavery, agitated and advocated by all good people. The Abolitionists were doing all they could to abolish slavery, and spent time and money and placed their own lives in jeopardy in behalf of freedom, liberty and equality. It was for this freedom, liberty and equality that men love so well that caused Nat Turner in 1832 to council together with other men for the purpose of liberating men. Then then concluded to enter upon their mission to liberate men of their race, to take from their necks that cursed yoke of slavery. They entered upon their work in the form of an insurrection. While the instruction had an irregular or an unusual form, it was expressive of great things. It was God like for the liberty of human souls. Nat Turner passes sleepless nights for it. He gave up laborious days, all pleasures of his were spurned, he endured afflicting poverty, he went through darkness, sorrows and contempt, and at last for liberty, not for himself alone, he expired at the hands of the hangman, as many other great spirits of the world have done, in all ages and in all times, especially when they undertook to agitate human rights and man's liberty. It is not a crime to seek liberty. It is worse than the crime of murder to take away the ignorant and innocent human beings liberty and freedom. In one he is relieved of all his pain and miseries, in the other he is tortured from day to day and year to year. Between the two, give me death at the hands of any one, I care 001311not who may strike the fatal blow. "She who can plan a noble deed, and never flag till it succeeds, though in the strife thy heart shall bleed; go on true soul, thine hour will come, thou'lt win the prize, they will reach the goal." Nobler words were scarcely written. Nat Turner is not dead. He lives in the hearts of those who love freedom and liberty. Though his body is resting in a quiet burying ground, placed there by those who love slavery, not freedom. He was hanged and murdered because he dared to speak in behalf of liberty and for no other cause was he murdered. Nat Turner, whose soul now lingers in the heavens, speaks in historic truths of the noble dead. We must remember that we all must die, but we hope to die Godlike, not as cruel beings but Christlike and sympathetic souls. We must be great in small things as well as large ones. Great in the self-consciousness of doing right and his path of glory will not end at one's grave.

"Truth crushed to earth will rise again, the eternal years of God are hers, but error wounded writhes with pain and dies among her worshipers." Earnest and zealous where our lots may be cast we may win the reward for which we strive and while some selfish motive may actuate us, success will have a double meaning, success for ourselves and success in doing good to our fellow creatures. Long before the sentiment of liberty ascended the height of the human mind and before the ever memorable John Brown fell lifeless at Harper's Ferry; long before the American eagle spread her golden wings toward the northern field of freedom, Nat Turner's mind was directed to accomplish liberty to human souls; yes, long before the sound of the trumpet was heard in the land and the brave soldier in '61 was leaving home and all earthly care, with sword at his side, with musket on his shoulder, he ascended the heights of the rocky mountains as it were, with banners waving and colors flying and with one grand and noble leap, landed upon the plains of the Southern confederacy and there, before bayonet, shell and ball, died for liberty, Nat Turner had laid a noble life upon the soil of Virginia for peace and progress, as well as the liberty and freedom to his people. We can not say too much in the name of Nat Turner and the insurrection which he brought about. But the historical facts are yet incomplete from the fact that all that Nat Turner did was kept a secret by Nat Turner himself, to begin with and to accomplish his purpose. The world may yet never know the full history of Nat Turner. He was murdered for his attempt to liberate humanity, and the uprising of the colored people in Virginia was kept a secret, that the news would not reach the ears of the other slaves, so that if they had any information or intelligence from Nat Turner, may never know when to proceed, as Turner did, or that Nat Turner had ever begun the work of liberating himself and others. In Hayti such a plan was successful and it certainly would have been equally successful and is for God, who rules all things, and who hardened the hearts of the southern slave holders, as they were beyond redemption and they excepted no terms offered as a compromise by the Martyr, Abraham Lincoln, and the result was that all were set 001412at liberty through the holy ghost, and Nat Turner's object was successful, even though he being dead and buried. You see that the right will triumph over wrong. Then dare to do right. This lecture has been made short on account of the late hour. We wish all well, and, ladies and gentlemen, let us hope for better things than is recorded in the past. Let us trust in that gracious being who has hitherto held our country in the hollow of his hand. Let us trust to the virtue and intelligence of the people, and to the efficacy of religious obligations. Let us hope that that fear of heaven, which expels all other fear, and that regard to duty which transcends all other regard, may influence public and private citizens and lead our glorious country onward and upward in a happy career, and may the sun, in his course, visit no land more free, happy and lovely than our own.

THE NEW INSURRECTION

Ladies and Gentlemen: Twelve hundred and sixty three years before the birth of Christ when all Tinessaly had assembled to celebrate the return of the Argonautic expedition so famous in song, so famous in story, Aeson alone the king did not join in the festival that was celebrated on that occasion oppressed with old age and upon the brink of the grave he could not enjoy the public mirth though his own son was the great chieftain of the expedition so successful in the objects of its mission and so safely returned, the dewy star that gave neptune the trackless sea for the golden fleece they followed, and had come back with the prize to receive the plaudits of all Jolchos, the king was not there and the heart of his son Jason, was melted to sorrow, and addressing his wife Medea, the sorcerer said you have heretofore saved my life and my obligations to you are inexpressibly great but I have one more favor to ask, "cut off from the years of my life and add them to my father's this you can do for all things are obedient to your art." His heart was full of grief, and as he thus spoke, tears come to the chieftain's eyes and the heart of Medea was touched with the tender love of her husband toward his old and infirm father and said: "not thus, not thus, I cannot abridge the years of one so dear to me, but I will do better, I will give youth and strength, to your father and prolong his life to many years, all the touching tenderness of filial love none has been greater than this. Cut off from the years of my life and add them to those of my father," beautiful as the exclamation of Ruth in her grief to Naomi entreat me not to leave thee or return from following after thee for whither thou goest I will go, where thou lodgest I will lodge, thy people shall be my people and thy God my God." In a chariot drawn by winged dragons she traversed many countries and gathered herbs from which she made a potion and drawing the blood from Aeson's veins injected in its stead the liquid she had prepared as the draught 001513was insinuated into the old man's veins. His beard and his gray hair darkened, the wrinkles on his face disappeared, and the vigor and strength of youth were again restored. This is the first recorded example of transfusion perhaps that suggested that of the blood so often tried as well as so often proved a failure here was the idea enunciated more than three thousand years past. When this is spoken of as one of the new methods adopted to save human life as by the unlettered it will be the response will come back that the idea was enunciated before the Trogan war we find pity, faith, skill and knowledge taught in this most beautiful story of ancient mythology characteristics we may say peculiarly becoming the good people of the present age, in this year we can begin to cut off all that which is contrary to real happiness, and add vigor and strength to our earthly welfare, add longlivity to our own life and earthly existence. Now Plato B C., 430, was a Rationalist and founded his system at the academy at a time when reason was powerful and the union of the church and academy was approaching, his chief persuasive power like Socrates lay in his gradual approach to the truth for which as better suited to his purpose he employed dialogues, which principally relates to the soul, the length of them prevents a repetition as they do not at least bear distinctly on the subject this evening. He first taught the doctrine if innate ideas which lacks combats so vigorously in his metaphysic these innate ideas Plato regarded as a self acting energy and as having an existence separate from the body, virtue he is defined to be imitation of God, perfect harmony resulting in no other way. Others do believe that the soul and body to be inseparable, which is right. I do not say but most Christians believe them as Plato to be separable, reasoning was powerful in ancient days in many directions, why not in this enlightened age, it ought to be so powerful to-day that a new insurrection could be brought into play in half the time as required to purify the impurities of ancient days. These things have been mentioned in order that you may go back into ancient days, think of the good and discard the bad, and as Plato search and seek the truth. The name insurrection presents an idea that might cause you to believe that I am going to talk to you about the end of time were I to tell you in this enlightened age that the dry bones were coming together on a certain day you would believe me false and untrue, many a prophet, false prophets in all ages have prophesied the time when the world should come to an end but they have missed the time thus far. I will endeavor to speak to you about the coming together of the dry bones but not the dry bones as mentioned in form in the bibical history. I will not attempt to specify any time when these dry bones that I speak of shall come together, the day is not far in the distant. The bones speak of are yet, but clothed with flesh and are dry in death but in life and flesh and when these bones come together there will an awakening in 001614modern times. They must come together or else God reigns, you can not always walk upon the narrowest edge of a railing without falling off, neither can you always swim across the deepest channel in the smallest river, the pictures we have in view are common ones, these are always before us in comparison they are the same pictures that were painted in ancient times only assuming a different lifelike appearance, we see about us on every hand these corrupted pictures, they are swimming in corruption and decay, if these pictures do not have the appearance of the bright diamonds and glisten like threads of gold they will soon have the appearance of the most tattered flag saved in the rebellion but not the honor born with it.

WHAT ARE THE PICTURES

We see a great many things we do not care to see it makes no difference how bad a man has once been it is no evidence that he cannot become a good and a better man, we have talked about the good work of a few or the half we have presented them in the light of heavenly bliss through news papers periodicals and otherwise, now let us for one moment look at the other few half in another light, and see what a photograph we have before us, we often read of men preaching that there is no God, no hereafter, while we do not claim to know but for this world's good we say that they are in the wrong world to preach it, it does them no good and no one else they are only serenely gliding in imagination on to distruction it is not this that I wish to speak of, the idea presented itself. I wish to speak of things to-night that is walking from the kitchen into the parlor, not literature we have a Republican form of government but when you look at the picture on election day in some portions of our country you conclude that it is a government without form, without law, without respect, it is a no use to make an assertion without facts to prove it. Look into our Southern States what a picture is presented there, they say that it is a government governed by the people and controlled by a majority but when you turn your heads towards the South you find that none of this is true it is governed by a rule worse than anarchy, an imperial government is a heavenly rule in comparison to it and one great political party is nearly as much responsible for this as another. Men upon election day in some sections of the country buy and sell their rights as a citizen and do not care for the controling of this government as if it was more than the work of satan himself. I believe that it is God's work and all men must begin to believe it too; Upon election day wagons are going to and fro with men often times drinking, yelling and often times getting into a quarrel and a fight at the polls, over something that they care little or think little about about two months afterwards and something that often times prove contrary to their interests especially when a bad man is installed in office, a bad rule is better than none, too much ruling is as bad as not enough. When you have a bad rule you see how to make a better one in the hornet's nest coming out with your eyes shut and 001715you are just as liable to step in a sink hole or a stream of water as you are to step on safe grounds, one person writing in the Scientific Monthly some time ago wanted to know if we were a nation of rascal, he evidently did not want to believe it himself, but he put forth facts to prove that we were, while I, unlike him do not lay the crimes committed in high places to states and municipalities I place them where they belong to men in high places and hold that morality of that great state of municipality had nothing to do with the commission of the unlawful act and would not have consented to it at all. When parties and conventions which claims to represent the people are controlled by spoils and they rule it becomes an engine of oppression that sooner or later will destroy the entire future of individual liberty.

THE CHURCH

We have churches all over the civilized but it seems that some time when they send missionaries abroad into the heathen land and they could find work at home yet undone now I do not mean to say that we are a heathen set it would be better to remain ignorant than have your picture adorn the walls of a rouge's gallery but how are the churches for the most part they all say that they are going to the same Heaven this may be true I do not dispute it nor would I but it tickles me when I see them splitting up, a handful going off to some other quarters to set up a little kingdom of its own and one denomination talking about the rules and practice and dicipline of the other in a slight way it tickles me because I despise it one rule if it is good in one church, is as good as the rule in another church, it is simply a manner we have to show our respect to the creator in our own way, that is all and nothing more. Ministers do not all like the company of another neither would I if it is had but some will not associate with one another on the account of the color that God gave him, and some churches do not want a colored man in it the members of these churches some times sever their connection with their own church because a colored man is is in it as a member, but these members and preachers will not refuse to say that they are going to Heaven, they will not refuse to say they are Christians, still but I say that they ought not to refuse to say so because when they are as inconsistent, as in consistency is consistent, this association is fast dying among Christian people who are beginning to look at the good work of men in order to encourage it, they tell me that at one time there were churches that had separate places within their walls called pits for the colored man, they evidently believed at that time that God separated his kingdom in that manner, but people, Christian people have begun to think and learn something this is truly the age of wonder, the idea of the ancient father for the most part is a thing of the past, in many particulars, the bad is dwindling and the good is beginning to rule in the proper manner.

001816
THE SLANDERER

Is the church, and he is found out of the church as well. He wants to have prominence and does not know how to attain it without laying falsehoods at the door of his superiors. Prominence comes to men according to the man. Men are oftentimes fools, but they are not as big fools as often as the other fellow who thinks that he is only wise and is continually calling some one else a fool. He who talks much and hears much about other people's affairs, talks on and hears many lies. We are losing time with this class of people. The slanderer is found everywhere. He has told many a story on the church and its ministers. And the good temperance people as well, have suffered to some extent, but none are hurt so bad but that their good works outlive the slanderer. A lie has its destination mapped out. It reaches that destination and dies while the truth has no destination, only to live forever in the hearts of all men.

TEMPERANCE

Intemperance is the curse of the nineteenth century. You say why do men get drunk, loaf around saloons, oftentimes murdered there, under the influence of liquor. You say why do they drink whisky, knowing that it causes them to commit great crimes, oftentimes causes them to help fill the jails, work houses and penitentiaries, causes them to go to their homes, where all is lovingly, everything there seems to be so pleasant and moving serenely over the waters of the deep of the minds only pleasant canoe. I will tell you why. While some men can quit drinking they will not, and others can not quit drinking intoxicating liquors. Those men who can quit drinking were not taught to drink in their younger days to any extent, while those who can not abstain, were taught it in their childhood days to an unlimited extent. I do not say that their parents taught them this in their young days because some one else other than their parents might have taught them to drink. Their associations might have caused it, or taught it to them. When Adam fell man fell, and he is still falling, although he shows signs of climbing the evolutionary ladder. He may succeed; I hope he will. If we believe the Bible to be true, does not man inherit the sins that Adam committed in the beginning? I believe the Bible to be true. Man, according to the Bible, is evil from the beginning. He inherited the evil. Now, if you raise your child up to and according to the rules of Christianity you will have a good child. You must attend to the raising of children as you would corn, or other product. When you fail to attend to your gardening you will have a bad crop. When you fail to attend to your child you will have a bad child. Let it do as it wishes and you will have a bad child, especially if its foreparents or grandparents are bad or were bad. If their foreparents were bad you must prevent the child from adding 001917bad to that it has inherited. If parents like their whisky and have been taught it in their young days, you can prevent your child from being a drunkard and a bar-room loafer. Do not teach a child to drink, do not let it drink intoxicating liquors. If you teach it to drink, don't you know that you are adding more to his desire for drink that he inherits from its parents. Intemperance never will be wiped out of this world until the parents generally look to their offspring. Although you may try to force it out by law you will then raise hard feelings, perhaps cause bloodshed, and after it is forced out it will be smuggled back into the state again and cause trouble on trouble, but the temperance people can by fighting this way do good. It has done good, but when parents generally begin to think more it will do better. I am here to tell you that before long the temperance element will rule. It may be not in our time that the element will succeed. I am not allied with the prohibition element but from observed facts I must admit to the truth.

AVARICIOUS SENTIMENT OF THE TIMES.

have spoken to you, among other things, about these bones clothed with flesh, but yet dry; about intemperance, and the worst picture of all, or very near it, is the slander photographed. Now, there are a few other pictures which do not resemble the brightness of the dripping snow, but instead resembles in color the black diamond that the poor laboring miners blast and haul up from the regions of Allegheny. One of these pictures unwaranted, is a vicious sentiment of the times. By this sort of sentiment you fail to get justice. The law is a farce and a dead letter on the statute books, and the constitution, which is supposed and should be the supreme fundamental object of all laws, cut of whose doors all laws should come. That constitution is often liable to be blown to pieces by the ill winds of a government actuated by a vicious sentiment, by this kind of a sentiment men and women are often murdered thrown out of house and home, and when a man is strung up to a lamp post or tree by a mob to die, that sentiment has a strong hold upon those sworn to execute the law and they fail to perform that sworn obligation that man has made to God and men, there is great work here for Christians to do, but I am one of those chaps who believe that Christianity will rule Christendom, I don't believe that the Bible is a failure, I believe it means just what it says, and says just what it means, I believe it is a divine work handed down to man through the wisdom of men whom God for that purpose created that is the reason I say that there will be a new resurrection. "There shall be signs and wonders," but some sits and wonders when that time shall come, get up and get about the Christian's duty, and when that is done it is not necessary to wonder when the time shall come. God knows more about that than man this is going to be the world of Christianity and the absence of old satan is going to be quite conspicuous although he has played a big hand in his time and he is dealing his last hand now and just as soon as that hand is played the other man will be out and he will be bankrupted [laughter,] or else the hand of God is upon us.

002018
EDUCATION.

There is something that is a great aid to progress the greatest instrument that leads one successfully to the top most round in the evolutionary ladder that is education, educate your son not to get enough of it but some people take a wrong view at education some seem to think after he is educated that that settles it, he must do nothing except that he can get to be clerk, or something easy and think it is not honorable to do anything but that one easy thing, now imagine for a moment the whole earth is educated nobody at work, we might as well take a gun and shoot our own heads off, no, when you have a profession of any kind, clerk or what ever you may be and you can not make a living exclusively by that it is honorable to do any work to make any work to make an honest living, if I could not make a living at profession I would be found doing some other honorable work. Education does not mean for you to say to work "good by," but on the other hand it means for you to say "good morning, how do you do, I am truly glad to see you looking so well." I believe that the masses of the people think as I do in regard to this matter yes there will be a new insurrection you may be sure of that you know at one time that human slavery was at its height. The sertiment of all political parties apart of that time supported or feared to suppress it but under the Godly hammer it disappeared out of existence never to return again and this is the way that all other evils will go, until the evil day shall come that people become so unfaithful and throw the biblical history aside as though it was a thing of the past then we may pass away as did the great cities mentioned in its history, some people say that that day is near at hand I have heard it said that men dispute the Bible as though it was a subject passed as a political issue of the day and printed in a newspaper, they give their ideas and the ones in respect of as though they knew just what they were talking about through these silverine reflections I do not fear to tell you that no man when he speaks that way knows any more what he is talking about than an infant two months old, the only difference is one is permitted to talk the other has not, the other has not the permission at that age, when man become sinful in their daily walks that is weilded out by the work of Christianity when man become so strongly convinced against the work of God, but abide by the laws of the land good in all respects but a firm believer in the Darwinian theory then he is beyond the reach of Christianity so far as it concerns the biblical history in its best parts. The good may be partially dead in some directions in a number of localities but it will surely be resurrected, you have heard of men in high places committing crimes, they do not always escape, they are often assigned to the prison walls, you have heard of these things and know what I have said and if the popular tendencies are not for the good and point in that direction we can look for a certain fulfillment of the holy writ which is not far in the distant conclusion in the language of Whittier.

"Evermore restrain evil and cherish good so shall there be another and happier life for thee.
