OBJECTIVE: To study the AIDS awareness among Industrial workers of Madras suburbs. METHODS: 1000 labourers and their spouses were given a questionnaire to be answered followed by interview on sexual behavior, STDs, AIDS, sex education and contraceptive practices. RESULTS: All practice vaginal sex; 22% indulge in oral sex but no bisexuals or homosexuals. 63% of Men regularly visit CSWF and have unprotected sex. Majority have heard of AIDS but have misconceptions and negative attitudes towards AIDS. They are of the opinion that by avoiding contact with CSW and homosexuals AIDS can be prevented and AIDS cannot be cured at present and no vaccine available. Though they know that condom can prevent STD, they do not use for no particular reason. They have heard about contraceptives and most of the women have undergone permanent sterilisation. CONCLUSION: AIDS awareness prevails already among the Industrial workers belonging to the mid-socio-economic group. Heterosexual mode being the possible route of STDs/HIV infection.
