WASHINGTON, Nov. 8, 2004 - Zemco Industry, Inc., a Buffalo, N.Y., firm, is voluntarily recalling approximately 50,000 pounds of frankfurters due to possible undercooking, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today.

All frankfurters are sold in one-to five-pound packages and bear the establishment code "EST. 5222" or "EST. 2701" inside the USDA mark of inspection. The products subject to recall are:
  • "JORDAN'S NATURAL CASING Frankfurters." Each product bears the code "87374" or "87373" and the sell by date "DEC 14."

The frankfurters were produced on Oct. 5 and Oct. 6, 2004, and were distributed to retail establishments in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York and Vermont.

The problem was discovered by the company following a consumer complaint. FSIS has received no reports of illnesses from consumption of the product.

Consumers with food safety questions can phone the toll-free USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline at l-800-535-4555. The hotline is available in English and Spanish and can be reached from l0 a.m. to 4 p.m. (Eastern Time) Monday through Friday. Recorded food safety messages are available 24 hours a day.

USDA Recall Classifications
Class I This is a health hazard situation where there is a reasonable probability that the use of the product will cause serious, adverse health consequences or death.
Class II This is a health hazard situation where there is a remote probability of adverse health consequences from the use of the product.
Class III This is a situation where the use of the product will not cause adverse health consequences.
