Facilities & Services

INFORMATION (NPS)

Lodgepole Visitor Center: Exhibits and a slide program on local geology and forest life, as well as books, maps, and first aid. Open daily early spring through late fall; open weekends in winter. In summer Crystal Cave tickets are sold here. (559) 565-4436.

Wilderness Permits: From late May through early September permits are issued in this office next to visitor center. 7am - 4pm. In fall through spring, get permits in the visitor center. (559) 565-4408.

Walter Fry Nature Center: Open weekends July through mid-August, noon-5 pm. A hands-on natural experience for children of all ages. In Lodgepole Campground, 1/2 mile east of the visitor center.

Giant Forest Museum. Housed in the historic market building at the old Giant Forest Village, the exciting new exhibits in this museum offer an in-depth look at the incredible giant sequoias. (559)565-4480.

CAMPING (NPS)

Tables, restrooms, drinking water, RV disposal stations; 6 people and 1 vehicle per site

Lodgepole: Elevation 6700'. North of Giant Forest 2 miles. 204 sites. Dorst Campground: Elevation 6800'. Opens mid-May, weather permitting. On Generals Highway, 8 miles north of Lodgepole. 201 sites. Reserve up to 5 months in advance, via same telephone numbers and internet address as for Lodgepole Campground (above). $20/day. Group sites available in this campground. LODGING (DNPS)

Wuksachi Village: This new facility is open year round just 4 miles north of the General Sherman Tree. It replaces the aging services that were removed from the Giant Forest in order to protect the sequoias. Reservations: (888)252-5757; www.visitsequoia.com.

FOOD/SHOPS (DNPS)

Wuksachi Village Dining Room: Open daily. Summer hours 7 am - 10 pm; dinner reservations required. (559)565-4070. Reduced hours in other seasons; check locally or call. Four miles north of the General Sherman Tree.

Wuksachi Village Gift Shop: Daily 8 am - 8 pm in summer; reduced hours in other seasons.

Wuksachi Ski Shop: Winter only; opens once sufficient snow falls. Cross-country ski & snowshoe rentals, ski lessons. Snowplay equipment for sale.

Lodgepole Market, Deli & Gift Shop: Next to Lodgepole Visitor Center. Supplies, emergency gasoline, outdoor equipment, breakfasts, sandwiches, ice cream, portable bear-proof food canisters, crafts. Starting late May daily 8am - 8pm; fall & spring 9am - 6pm; closed in winter.

PICNIC AREAS (NPS)

Tables, pit toilets, fire pits with grills, and drinking water unless indicated. Not plowed in winter.

Halstead Meadow: On Generals Highway, 4 miles north of Lodgepole. No water.

Lodgepole: On Generals Highway, 1/4 mile north of Lodgepole junction. No fire pits or water.

Wolverton: Two miles north of the Sherman Tree via the Wolverton Road. This becomes an active cross-country ski and snowplay area in winter.

Pinewood: On Generals Highway, 1 mile north of Giant Forest Museum.

Crescent Meadow: On Moro Rock/Crescent Meadow Road, 2.6 miles from village. The road and picnic area close with the first significant snow. Restrooms, no fire pits.

OTHER FACILITIES

Laundromat (DNPS): Next to market. Coin operated. Open daily spring through fall; closed in winter.

Showers (DNPS): $3/person. Open daily spring through fall 8am - 1pm and 3 - 8pm.

Post Office: Behind visitor center. Weekdays 8:30am - 1pm & 1:30 - 4pm. Stamp machine 24 hours. Address mail to visitors: c/o General Delivery, Sequoia National Park, CA 93262.

CRYSTAL CAVE

Tickets must be purchased at Lodgepole Visitor Center or Foothills Visitor Center at least 1-1/2 hours in advance; tickets are not sold at the cave. Open late spring through early fall.

Spring & Fall:

Tours Fridays through Mondays on the hour, 11am - 4pm.

Summer (through mid-September):

Tours daily on the half-hour, 11am - 4pm.

Starting mid-September, tours on the hour.

Fees:

Ages 13-61 $10; ages 6-12 $5; ages 62 & up $8; under 6 free. National Park Passes and Golden Age Passes do not apply. SNHA members get a 50% discount!

Discovery Tours:

Daily two-hour, in-depth tours through early September. Get to see this spectacular cavern in a small group. Limited to 12 people aged 13 & up. $18/person ($16 ages 62 & up; $12 for SNHA members).

Crystal Cave Road is 15 miles from Hwy. 198/park entrance; then 7 miles to cave parking.

Wear sturdy shoes for the steep 1/4-mile trail to the cave where the tours start. Bring a jacket for the 50-minute tour of this beautiful marble cavern (free loaner jackets are available); cave temperature is 50°F (9 degrees C). No strollers, tripods, backpacks, or baby backpacks; not wheelchair accessible. No buses, trailers, or vehicles over 20 feet long on Crystal Cave Road. Operated by SNHA.
