Abstract:

This dataset contains digitized features showing the seasonal vegetation management efforts on the Roan Mountain Massif on the Tennessee/North Carolina border from 1989-2005. As well, botany plots and general landmark locations, US Forest Service Goat Grazing Paddock Locations, and Mr. Robert (Bob) M. Harvey's personal knowledge locations of the US Forest Service Goat Grazing Paddock locations are included.

The source hardcopy map diagrams were originally done primarily for the records of Judy Murray, the Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy (SAHC) Highlands of Roan Stewardship Director, and for Bob Harvey, the individual responsible for the generation of these diagrams on a yearly basis since 1989.

The source hardcopy maps from which these data are taken digitized are the only known visual record of management activities from year to year for Round Bald and Engine Gap at Roan Mountain.

Areas of management are denoted by shading for the purpose of general representation for each season. Briar cutting on the Roan is typically done by Bob Harvey's SAHC volunteer crew, Carol Coffey's SAHC volunteer crew, the SAHC seasonal ecologist, contract person (s) with walking mower and or brush cutters, or a U.S. Forest Service track mower.

The basemap used for the yearly diagrams showing the outline boundary extent of Round Bald and Engine Gap was generated comes from a U.S. Forest Service outline map of the area.

This metadata record documents legacy data to the

extent practical, as required by Executive Order 12906, "Coordinating

Geographic Data Acquisition and Access: The National Spatial Data

Infrastructure," dated April 11, 1994." Details may be missing, but given the resources

available, the information provided herein is as concise as possible at this point in time.

As taken from the hardcopy SAHC source maps: The landmark features on the map were obtained in 94 an 99 by rather crude surveyingone person working alone with plastic surveyors chain and Brunton compass. Per the source map creator, it is hoped that the error of positioning is generally not grater than 50 feet.

As taken from the harcopy SAHC maps: the USFS goat paddock features-based on his personal knowledge-are considerably closer to their actual spatial extent per the 1990 SAHC briar cutting map.. The areas of his approximations are, per his note, considerably closer.
