Robin, Thanks for those tips. I will definitely get a hold of "Ennis' Gift". Your points are well taken. I will check into the Lab School of Washington, also. I do think that F.A.T. City is good for adults to see what can happen in the school setting with folks with LD. LD adults will be able to relate and understand why their school experience was so frustrating. If you have any great ideas about how to market these community programs including wording on posters, catchy lines that will peak the interest, etc., they will be welcome. I want to do a thorough job of advertising them. I plan to meet with our local newspaper staff to get them interested and on our side. Betsy S. FAT City is very direct and requires some good discussion. As I have noted here before, I think that FAT City is an excellent illustration of how TEACHERS misunderstand learners and make learning hard for them, not so much about persons with LD and how they confuse things. Ennis' gift is definitely about and by persons with LD of all ages, so the two complement each other-- looking at the persons with LD and then looking at ways in which their different look at the world is often so sadly misconstrued by teachers. Also, the Lab School of Washington has a whole set of videos about its approach to teaching people with LD and are excellent. I think the website is labschool.org It is a school only for persons with LD from pre-school through adult. City. It is a discussion with some of the participants of the "F.A.T. City, How Difficult Can This Be", and they talk about the history of the original video, trends and issues in the field of learning disabilities and the challenges ahead for parents and professionals in the field. I am planning a collaborative effort this coming school year with our local Literacy Council, the Charter Schools and the Public Library to show both of those and possibly "Ennis' Gift" to the community followed up by workshops and/or discussion on LD for those interested. It will be interesting to see the response. Every time I see it I am astounded at how painful learning can be when the learner is so misunderstood. I haven't seen the sequel to that-- has anyone on the list? Is it good, too? Another that offers not only the stories--many told by adults--but some real solutions and is gorgeously done is Ennis' Gift, from the Ennis Cosby foundation. A lovely. lovely video. The F.A.T. City Workshop by Rick Lavoie. It is excellent in sensitizing and creating awareness of how students (people) with LD experience challenges in their daily lives, as well as, strategies for working with these students. It also comes with a practical discussion guide. You can find more information and resources at <http://ricklavoie.com/> Ricklavoie.com. This would be an outstanding tool to start the year with.
