OBJECTIVE: To provide the authorities concerned with the data necessary for designing strategies for prevention of HIV transmission in the circuit of prostitution in Madras. So far the circuit of prostitution has not been addressed by the public health authorities nor by private agencies. METHODOLOGY: The main method of research was participant observation. A team of researchers posing as clients approached street workers, family girls, clients, brokers and brothels. Researchers became part of the circuit and in the course of research built close rapport. DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT: Support of civil and police authorities was ensured. Team was trained in research methodology. During a period of 4 months a number of qualitative research steps were taken. Key persons controlling the sex trade were identified and approached. Peer leaders from among street workers, family girls, brothel based women were contacted and in depth interviews were undertaken. An in dept client study was undertaken. Focus groups were conducted with sex workers and clients, and with affiliated groups of brokers. RESULTS: Brothels, pick up points, cruising areas, lodges and other places where sex takes place were mapped. The sex trade in Madras takes place in a covert and hidden way, as prostitution is considered illegal and socially taboo. Unlike in other parts of India, the law is strictly enforced. Solid ground work for intervention has been provided. On the basis of the ethnographic material, of inventory and other data a comprehensive plan was developed to tackle the circuit of prostitution in Madras with AIDs prevention program.
