Project Description |
Conduct a targeted technology transfer review of 18 significant projects from the Class II and Class Revisit program. Efforts such as these are geared to increase production, and decrease costs by sharing information (lessons learned, successful technologies, best practices and pitfalls). The Permian Basin is dominated by independent producers who benefit the most from these types of program reviews.
|
Project Background |
The Class program was developed in response to rapidly declining domestic production and the realization that huge volumes of oil were being abandoned in reservoirs because of uneconomic production techniques. The program was designed as a critical element of the Oil Program to move improved oil recovery technology from the conceptual stage through research, pilot scale field experiments and full-scale field demonstrations to industry acceptance and commercialization. The original concept was to individually study ten different categories of reservoirs or Classes, however funding constraints limited the program to Classes I through III, the Fluvial Dominated Deltaic, Shallow Shelf Carbonate and Slope and Basin Clastic reservoirs.
Some of the most demonstrated Oil program successes have evolved from the Class program.
This objective of this programmatic review is to focus on eighteen selected projects that demonstrate the most significant technology transfer opportunities. This review has been timed to follow the Permian Basin International Oil Show, which attracts over a thousand attendees, most of whom are local independent producers and service companies. Several of the projects selected for this review were conducted in the Permian Basin, one of the most prolific domestic oil and gas resources.
This program review offers the Department's Fossil Energy office an opportunity to share project results and transfer technology to stakeholders interested in increasing domestic oil production. It also offers the Department a feedback mechanism, useful in program planning and portfolio development.

Title: | Workshop Review Dec 12, 2002 |
Date: | 12/12/2002 |
Description | Months of organization and planning for DOE's Class II Review paid off with an enthusiastic and attentive audience. There were 102 pre-registered and additional 12 people registered at the door. Registration was handled by CEED, and a list with addresses has been provided to DOE. A follow up CD to include all the power point presentations from the speakers will be mailed out around the 1st of the year 2003.
Fifteen presentations were made on the nine original Class II projects and six Class Revisit projects in shallow shelf carbonate reservoirs. Each of the speakers had 20 minutes for the presentation and 5 minutes for questions. The focused depositional topic approach with emphasis on different technologies to address common problems in carbonate reservoirs in six major U. S. basins was well received. Fourteen of the speakers were the original principal investigators for the projects.
Handouts at the Class II Review:
" A new CD on Class II shallow shelf carbonate reservoirs with the final reports from the completed Class II projects. 120 of the CD's were distributed, and CEED kept an additional 30 copies for distribution and requests from local operators and consultants.
" A program book, which included; the agenda for the meeting, summary and contact data from each of the 15 projects, the abstracts for each of the presentations, and a list of all available DOE annual and final reports for the Class II and Class Revisit carbonate projects. 120 copies were distributed.
" The Class I CD on fluvial-deltaic reservoirs. 85 copies were distributed
