Stan Getz
by Gustavo Dominguez*
It was a vain thought
that confused the chord.
The Village, Stan, your loneliness, remember?
Uncertain and kind caravans
with rhythmic abandon.
Lustful beats of lascivious mulattas
conjuring the clarity of the beaches
and in the empty spaces of the essential forest
pirouettes of enthusiasm
varnishing the rage with glitter.
Maybe forever has died
the humid, vital
pulse of blood and joy
that thrust the people
to offer the sun their exultation through dancing.
But something similar
one night between lights of violet and fear
carries you to the bower, to the beaten earth
where rhythm reigns, the sweat,
the sacred communion of the bodies.
Coming out of the hole you proved
that the note was ambiguous
and intellectual, as always, paradise.
Scope of the Bibliography
This bibliography contains bibliographic citations to materials about the late tenor saxophonist Stan Getz. These citations include references to published periodical literature, articles from news wire services, books, dissertations, films, videos, television programs, a few radio broadcasts, and a few websites. Most of the materials cited in this bibliography are from published periodical literature. The bibliographic citations are primarily from English-language sources, although citations from many other languages are included as well. The publication dates for the materials included span from 1944 to November 27, 2003. At the start of this project in 1991, I made a decision not to include websites. When the bibliography was nearing completion, however, I decided to add just three websites in the Discographies and Discographical Information section. This decision to almost wholly exclude websites was done for a couple of reasons. First, websites sometimes disappear. Second, they are mutable: the content can easily change over time. Therefore, if one includes a website in a bibliography based on its content at one point in time, this website may not be appropriate for inclusion at a later date if it has undergone certain content changes.
No bibliography can be completely comprehensive because one has to rely on bibliographic tools such as indexes and bibliographies to gather the literature. I attempted, however, to cast my net wide in order to catch as many citations as possible. A select number of journals not included in indexes were searched issue by issue for relevant material. There are hundreds of articles one can find in databases such as Lexis-Nexis that mention Getz, but are not articles about him. These articles are not included here. Small news blurbs with information that could be found in many other sources are not included. There are some other minor pieces which did not seem to have value and these, too, are not included. This was a judgment call. With a couple of exceptions, mere announcements for performances are excluded.
As I gathered the obituaries on Getz, it became evident that to include them all would be a disservice to the user of this bibliography. Many of the obituaries in newspapers were based on the obituary written by Louinn Lota for the Associated Press. Therefore, it made no sense to include dozens and dozens of obituaries that were simply subsets of the obituary by Lota. Consequently, for the English-language and French-language obituaries, I included the best obituaries and those that included something other obituaries did not. Obituaries in other languages were not selective.
Similarly, there are many biographical encyclopedias and dictionaries that have entries on Getz. However, there is a great redundancy of information among them. Some entries are quite brief, with all that information contained in another source. Therefore, the biographical encyclopedias and dictionaries included are selective, including those that are the best and that are widely held in libraries. Reviews to books about Getz, such as Don Maggin's biography, are excluded, unless the review is but one part of a larger article on Getz.
Acknowledgments
I have many people to thank who helped me during the course of this long bibliographic journey. My friend Abdelali Houissa, Middle East and Islamic Studies Librarian at Cornell University, helped in various ways: translating album reviews in French that were particularly difficult to understand, locating publication details for a few German periodicals cited in this bibliography, and obtaining some articles for me as well. Finally, he provided me encouragement and support during the many years that it took to complete this work. My friend JosÄ Diaz, Chemistry Librarian at Ohio State University, obtained articles for me, checked the spelling of Spanish and Portuguese words, translated Gustavo DomÆnguez's poem on Stan Getz from Spanish to English, helped me think through various issues I faced, and provided continued encouragement. My friend Karen Diaz, Instruction Librarian at Ohio State University, did a Lexis-Nexis search for me way before I had access to that database. That search was invaluable. She also provided advice and support during the course of this project. My friend and employer, John Ned Lipsitz, generously allowed me to leave work early on Wednesdays so that I could work on this bibliography. Donald. L. Maggin graciously provided me with copies of some articles I needed, but were difficult to obtain, as well as a video. The staff at the Institute of Jazz Studies-in particular, Dan Morgenstern, Vincent Pelote, Tad Hershorn, Joe Peterson, and Esther Smith-made my visits to the Institute a pleasure. Wolfram Knauer and Arndt Weidler at the Jazz Institut in Darmstadt, Germany were unfailing responsive to my requests. They were great. My friend and co-worker Diane Swiatek and her mother W?adys?awa Kuzinowicz kindly translated an article in Ruch Muzyczny. Begoûa Paredes located Gustavo DomÆnguez for me; otherwise, I would never have found him. Gustavo DomÆnguez kindly granted me permission to include his poem on Getz. Amy LaMendola, friend and colleague, provided legal counsel. Other people who helped me along the way include the following: Jan McKee and Bryan Cornell, librarians in the Recorded Sound Division at the Library of Congress; Zoran Sinobad, Reference Librarian in the Moving Image Section of the Library of Congress; Gloria Sandler of Newsday; Andrew Simons and Paul Wilson at the British Library; Bob Acker, Reference Librarian and Music Bibliographer at DePaul University; Sha Towers, Public Services Coordinator at Baylor University; Susan Gangl, Reference Librarian, University of Minnesota; Bob Acker, Reference Librarian and Music Bibliographer, DePaul University; Jane Burton, a researcher at the Northern Echo; Mischa Koppenberg; Susan Goldstein, Librarian at Bowling Green University; Christopher Miller, Librarian at the Advocate; Jim Flachsenhaar, Editor of the Courier-News; and Anne Magill, Library Administrative Supervisor at The San Diego Union-Tribune. And finally, a special thanks to my Miss Kate.
In this bibliography, materials in English and French are annotated. There are a few discographical articles in a Japanese-language periodical, Swing Journal, that are also annotated because the discographical information is given in English. There is one article from Musica Jazz, an Italian-language journal, which appears in the discographical section with an annotation because the information provided is in English, not Italian. I found one article in Polish from Ruch Muzyczny which I was able to annotate because a friend and her mother translated the article for me. Finally, my friend Abdelali Houissa helped me write an annotation of Hans-Jƒrgen Schaal's biography on Getz. Because this was one of the books on Getz, I felt it was imperative to have an annotation. All other German-language materials, however, are not annotated. Because I located materials on Getz in languages I could not read, I wanted to include these even if I couldn't annotate them. These materials in Danish, Dutch, German, Italian, Norwegian, Spanish, and Swedish are included in the final section of the bibliography as an appendix.
For the sake of consistency within the citations and annotations, song titles are given in quotation marks, even if in the original source document this was not the case. Album titles, on the other hand, are always italicized. This consistency of form allows the reader to easily distinguish between the two. Catalog numbers for albums that are provided in the citations are given as they are set forth in the corresponding reviews. If the catalog number is clearly wrong, the correct number is put in brackets. Sometimes, reviewers interpreted the album title differently. In these cases, I had to make a choice of one title to use as the heading for all the reviews listed under it. Because catalog librarians have rules to guide them in determining the title of a work, the title given in a catalog record was almost always used as the title heading for all the reviews listed under it. References, when deemed necessary, are given from the alternate titles.
Sometimes a reviewer covers more than one album by Getz in a single review article. In this case, the article is listed under each album title. The two major sources used to verify discographical information were Arne Astrup's The Revised Stan Getz Discography, 3rd edition, and Tom Lord's The Jazz Discography. These two sources are referred to as Astrup and as Lord in the discographical notes. Not all reviews provided the catalog number for the album being reviewed, but I attempted to verify the information for the albums for which I had catalog numbers. When necessary, I have provided discographical notes to elaborate on such things as differences among various releases of a particular album. Although this is not a discography, I have made every effort at discographical accuracy.
Some of the articles listed here were found in the newspaper clippings file on Getz at the Institute of Jazz Studies. If the actual publication date and publication title do not appear on the copy and are instead written on the copy, these facts are indicated in the bibliography by being enclosed in brackets. Therefore, if either the title of the publication or the date of publication, or both, are given in brackets, this indicates these publication details do not come directly from the publication itself, but instead were supplied by someone.
Names are sometimes spelled differently by different authors. Thus, some authors use Andy LaVerne while others use Andy Laverne. In such instances I consulted various biographical sources and used the predominant spelling wherever the name was not used in a quote. Wherever the name is quoted in an annotation, the spelling is left as it appears in the original source. The one exception was the spelling of Joïo Gilberto's first name. Many articles have just Joao. It has been changed to Joïo everywhere in the bibliography, even in quotations. Likewise, song titles sometimes vary slightly among articles. Astrup and Lord were consulted for the correct title and this title was used in the discographical information and annotations, unless the title was part of a quote. In that case, the title was left as given in the article.
Citation format of magazines and journals: the number preceding the date is the volume number unless it has "no." before it. In that case, it is the issue number. For album reviews, the music publisher and, if provided in the review, the catalog number for the album are given immediately after the title of the album.

 4. Lynch, Kevin. "Getz Creates a Serene Jazz." Review of the Stan Getz Quartet at the Jazz Gallery, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, September 1982. The Milwaukee Journal (September 20, 1982). [NewsBank Performing Arts vol. IX, October 1982, PER 27:B4]
In the first example, Academy of Jazz is the name of the album reviewed, Jazz View is the publisher of the album, and COD 024 is the publisher's catalog number for that particular album. The number 45 is the volume number for Jazz Journal International. In the second example, no. 393 is the issue number, not the volume number of Jazz Magazine. In the third example, Lexis-Nexis indicates the electronic database in which this article was found. More on this below.
For those articles I found through an electronic database, the name of the database is provided in brackets at the very end of the citation. If users of this bibliography have access to these databases, they may be able to retrieve the articles through those databases. Keep in mind that libraries who subscribe to these databases have agreements with the database service providers for what they will have access to. Therefore, some libraries may have access to a particular publication, such as the Chicago Tribune, that another library does not. Therefore, even though I indicate the database where I located the material, the user may not be able to locate a particular article in the same database because the library from which he is searching does not include that publication as part of the user agreement between the library and the database service provider. Please also note that some of the articles I found in these electronic databases have been deleted pursuant to the Tasini court case. The electronic databases included in the bibliographic citations are Dialog, Dow Jones Interactive (DJI), Factiva, InfoTrac OneFile, and Lexis-Nexis. Since I gathered my citations from Dow Jones Interactive, it has been phased out and supplanted by Factiva, which includes even more titles than Dow Jones Interactive. A non-electronic database that I have included in bibliographic citations is NewsBank. NewsBank indexes a number of newspapers and provides on microfiche copies of the articles indexed. Thus, in the bibliographic citation example number 4 above, NewsBank Performing Arts vol. IX, October 1982, PER 27:B4 is the location designation for the newspaper article in the NewsBank microfiche collection. Please note that the NewsBank articles on microfiche do not have the page number of the original article. Therefore, articles from NewsBank will not include page numbers in the citation. Also, some articles gleaned from electronic databases did not include page numbers for the articles either.
The arrangement of the citations in the bibliography varies. In Section 1. Album Reviews, the albums are arranged alphabetically, and the citations under each album title are arranged alphabetically. In Section 2. Performance Reviews, the citations are arranged chronologically according to the date of the performance. The citations in the remaining sections, apart from the very last section, are arranged alphabetically by author or, if there is no author, by the title.
An appendix containing citations in languages such as Dutch and Swedish is arranged first by language, then alphabetically by periodical title, and then by author or article title.
