The aurora was first seen at 6:05 p.m., at which hour an arch extended from S.-125o-W. to S.-210o-W., reaching in the north an altitude of about 15o. At 6:45 p.m. beautiful yellowish green streamers rose out of the arch to perhaps 30o altitude. At 7:10 p.m. three distinct arches, the uppermost 40o above the horizon were noted, with the streamers still shooting up from the lower one which was just above the horizon. These arches gradually dissolved into a diffused yellowish light which covered the entire heavens north of the zenith; this was at 9:00 p.m. These conditions continued until 10:30 p.m., when the aurora diminished in brilliancy and only a few pale streamers and a low bank of dark clouds remained. A very brilliant auroral display occurred throughout New England on the evening of December 3rd. The aurora was first seen at Boston at 6.05 p.m. At that hour an arch extended from S. 125o W. to S. 210o W., reaching in the north an altitude of about 15o. At 6.45 p.m. beautiful yellowish green streamers rose out of the arch to about 30o altitude. At 7.10 p.m. three distinct arches were seen, the uppermost 40o above the horizon, with streamers still shooting up from the lower one which was just above the horizon. These three arches gradually dissolved into a diffused yellowish light which covered the entire heavens north of the zenith at 9 o'clock p.m. These conditions continued until 10.30 p.m. when the aurora diminished in brilliancy, and soon only a few pale streamers and a low bank of clouds remained. There was nothing phenomenal about the aurora, but it has been some time since such a brilliant display was witnessed. Nearly all of the voluntary observers throughout New England noted this aurora in their monthly reports, and several have given brief descriptions of it which are herewith quoted. ... [CD] 1896 12 3 EAST TEMPLETON MASSACHUSETTS Mr. Lucien Gove, Voluntary Observer at East Templeton, Mass. recorded that the display was remarkable for the lightning like flashes of light. [CD] 1896 12 3 GROTON MASSACHUSETTS Mr. Charles Woolley, Groton, Mass., speaks of the brilliancy of the display, with prismatic colors. 1896 12 3 NANTUCKET MASSACHUSETTS 8 to 11 p.m. Brilliant aurora visible from 8 to 11 p.m. 1896 12 3 WOODS HOLE MASSACHUSETTS 7.15 p.m., 11.00 p.m. A brilliant auroral arch formed about 7.15 p.m. and continued till about 11 p.m. From 9 p.m. to 10 p.m. bright and active streamers were shot out from it and luminous clouds formed and drifted southward. 1896 12 3 PLYMOUTH NEW HAMPSHIRE At Plymouth, N.H. (Miss Helen M. Clark, Observer) the aurora was the most brilliant of the season and continued through the night. [CD] 1896 12 3 BLOCK ISLAND RHODE ISLAND Faint Aurora on 3", from 8 p.m. to 10.40 p.m. A faint aurora was observed 7.30 p.m. and continued till 10.40 p.m. 1896 12 3 PROVIDENCE RHODE ISLAND The observers at the Ladd Observatory in Providence, R.I. state that the display was grand, lasting from 9.15 to 9.50 p.m., and culminating at 9.35 p.m. with brilliant streamers and greenish curtain-like folds. The arch was perfect. [CD] 1896 12 3 NORTHFIELD VERMONT [entry for 12/4:] An Aurora was visible from 7.15 p.m. 3rdg to 10.30 p.m. 3rd and probably later. Another aurora was observed from 8.30 p.m. to 9.30 p.m. It extended from about 10 degrees west of north to 50 degrees east of north. It began about 20 degrees from the horizon and at times flashed up from 40 to 60 degrees from the base. There were no brilliant displays of color. 1898 3 15 EASTPORT MAINE 8 to 11.30 p.m. 1898 3 15 PORTLAND MAINE 7.10 p.m. to 7.50 p.m. A magnificent auroral display observed from 7.10 p.m. to 7.50 p.m. An arch about 30 degrees altitude with an azimuth extent of about 80 degrees from the northwest to the northeast. Brilliant streamers kept shooting up from the arch to the zenith and two large columns from the northeast end frequently passed the zenith and faded out in the south. A greenish tinge seemed to be the predominating color but some portions of the display had a brilliant crimson hue. 1898 3 15 NANTUCKET MASSACHUSETTS 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Aurora began at 7 p.m., and disappeared about 9, it appeared in north, but finally extended to the north east, and went as high as the zenith, during the flashes which were frequent, and extremely brilliant, and the rainbow colors, blending to a pink were visible, at an altitude of 30 degrees there was a dark stratus cloud, forming a base for the streamers, and below this to the horizon, there was a deep yellow light during the display. 1898 3 15 VINEYARD HAVEN MASSACHUSETTS A magnificent auroral display was witnessed at 7 p.m.; the auroral band extended from the east, quite near the horizon, where it appeared to be about 7 degrees in breadth, across the heavens, about 10 degrees north of zenith, to the opposite point about 15 degrees north of west, and to within 15 degrees of the horizon; where the breadth decreased to about 3 deg. it was in continual motion, lateral; that portion of the heavens north of the band. was for over an hour made bright by continual streamers, as many as six was observed at the same time, and in nearly every instant the streamers would reach the zenith, and frequently that point would be far passed. The color of the aurora was a very light gray, almost white, a shade or so lighter than the reflected light from smoke usually seen at large conflagrations. 1898 3 15 WOODS HOLE MASSACHUSETTS during the night Very bright aurora first seen at 6.25 p.m. continued till after midnight. [Note: obvious typo for 16th.] Consisted of an arch with streamers, azimuth 115 to 245 degrees, altitude 30 with streamers to 60 degrees. Streamers were weak and at 9:40 p.m. had ceased to manifest themselves, leaving only the arch. I am informed by creditable parties that the aurora manifested itself with increased energy after midnight. 1898 3 16 NORTHFIELD VERMONT An Aurora observed from 6:00 p.m. to past midnight, 15th. First observed in the zenith at 6:00 p.m. in the form of a corona extending northeastward to a zenith distance of about 30 degrees. This condition increased in intensity rapidly and at 6:30 p.m. the corona had extended south to a zenith distance of 20 degrees, the margin being very irregular. The usual auroral arch had formed and the northern sky was covered with streamers and diffuse whitish light. The display reached a maximum at 8:00 p.m. and then decreased. In using an engineer's theodolite during the display I found the magnetic needle of the instrument useless; the north end being attracted upward against the glass plate with sufficient force to render it immovable. 1898 4 7 NORTHFIELD VERMONT Faint aurora observed from 8:15 p.m. to 11:25 p.m.; consisted of the usual diffused glow, masked by moonlight. 1898 4 12 NORTHFIELD VERMONT Aurora from 7:25 p.m. to D.N.
