Archeological Field Experience

1-2/97 Archeological Investigations at De Soto National Memorial, Bradenton, FL. Directed excavations and testing of three prehistoric shell mounds, testing of prehistoric shell ridge midden features, testing around the William Shaw Tabby House (ca.1843-1856), GPS and GIS mapping of features, and metal detector survey.

6-7/96 Archeological Survey of Ninety-Six National Historic Site, including excavation of a Revolutionary War Period Cellar, archeological testing of the Goudey Village and Trading Post site, metal detector survey of Greene's Army Camp, determining site limits and mapping of an unmarked cemetery, and laser theodolite mapping of the park and features.

1-2/96 Survey and testing at Fort Caroline National Monument, Jacksonville, FL, including testing and excavations, laser theodolite survey and mapping, and Global Positioning System mapping in attempt to locate the original 1565 French fort and settlement.

11/95 Section 106 Compliance testing and clearance at Cumberland Island National Seashore, St. Marys, GA. Conducted shovel testing, mapping, photography, and recording of the Bachlott House parking lot.

5-6/95 Archeological investigations at Cape Canaveral National Seashore, FL, of a possible 16th century French shipwreck survivor's camp.. Excavated shell middens and features, conducted metal detector survey, transit mapping and Global Positioning System mapping.

5/95 NAGPRA removal and reburial of disturbed burial at Cape Canaveral National Seashore.

2-4/95 Survey of Stones River National Battlefield, Murfreesboro, TN. Conducted archeological testing and excavations, metal detector survey, GPS, mapping, use of Electro Conductivity, Soil Resistivity and Gradiometer remote sensing machines, and operated Sokkia Laser Transit of Civil War Battlefield.

4-5/93 Survey and excavations at Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area, TN and KY. Located and tested prehistoric sites, recorded and mapped rockshelter sites, located and recorded site of Civil War period salt mine.

9/92 Investigations at Charles Pickney National Historic Site, Charleston, SC. Conducted testing, metal detector survey, and Ground Penetrating Radar survey of plantation site, and identified possible slave quarters.

5/92 Survey of Gulf Islands National Seashore, Pensacola, FL. Conducted testing and evaluations, performed metal detector survey, and assisted with Ground Penetrating Radar survey. Identified Civil War encampment, possible earthworks, and structural remains of the 17th Century Spanish settlement of Santa Rosa-Pensacola.

4/92 Investigations at Russell Cave National Park, Bridgeport, AL. Conducted controlled surface collection, testing and excavations, Global Positioning System and laser theodolite mapping, surface reconnaissance of caves. Identified and evaluated 15 prehistoric and historic sites.

2/92 Survey and testing of Banks Lake National Wildlife Refuge, Lakeland, GA. Conducted testing and excavations of historic dam site and prehistoric habitation site to determine significance of sites and to recommend appropriate mitigation.

1/92 Testing of Mammoth Cave National Park, Mammoth Cave, KY. Conducted bluff line survey, delineated site boundaries and identified prehistoric and historic sites.

12/91 Investigations of the William Johnson House, Natchez National Historic Site, Natchez, MS. Conducted excavations of foundations and structural remains inside the 19th century home of ante-bellum Freed black slave, William Johnson.

11/91 Testing of the Melrose Mansion National Historic Site, Natchez, MS. Conducted excavation, mapping and photography of investigations at ante-bellum mansion. Assisted in evaluation of features and recommending appropriate mitigation.

11/91 Pedestrian survey of bulldozing activities of the 3X-35 site on the Natchez-Trace National Parkway, Natchez, MS. Assisted in site monitoring, and responsible for data recovery of features, recording, mapping and photography.

11/91 Investigations at Fort Brown, Brownsville, TX. Conducted testing and excavations to determine site integrity and significance, to recommend appropriate mitigation. Conducted pedestrian survey during bulldozer trenching. Profile mapped 100 meter trench. Conducted Brunton survey and photography.

10/91 Volunteer Archeological Assistant on the Tutu Project, St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands. Conducted soil flotation of samples, excavations of burials, shell middens and post-holes, and assisted with photography and site tours of prehistoric inland village site.

9/91 Data recovery investigations at Charles Pickney National Historic Site, Charleston, SC. Assisted in testing, locating and the excavation of features and structures of 18th-19th century plantation.

6/91 Survey and testing at Great Smoky Mountains National Park, NC and TN. Compliance testing of proposed sewer line, identified sites and boundaries of proto-historic Cherokee sites.

Current Research: Directing field and lab investigations of three Prehistoric shell mounds and five curvilinear shell ridge midden features at De Soto National Memorial. The sites at the park are the remains of a once extensive shell mound complex known as Shaw's Point (8Ma7), possibly dating from the Deptford period through the Safety Harbor periods.
