Automated Fluidics for BEADS Sensors (411)

Graphic of multiposition selection valve, reagents, samples, pump, etc., demonstrating automated fluidics system

Problem: Need automated fluidic system to provide transport of test analyte, sensor beads, and operational solutions.

Project Activity Scope (from Technical Overview Chart): Sensors and Devices through Instruments

PNNL Solution:

  • Designed components and system to allow reliable, long-term independent operation
  • Rotary valve gives reliable fluid switching for small fluid volumes
  • Cell design allows bead capture and release and signal detection
  • Design allows use of blanks and calibration standards
  • Practical systems demonstrated

Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs: Bead attachment chemistry; antibody development; renewable filter system development; bead handling methodologies; sample bead-trap/flow-cell design for reliable bead exchange (rotating rod concept); interface requirements to multiple sensor/detection technologies. Integration with detection modalities (e.g., absorbance, fluorescence, electrochemical, etc.).
