Strategic Priority # 2: Strategic Management
01 Key Initiative: New PCU Governance Model
Leaders: Maureen Gormley, Chief Operating Officer
Clare Hastings, CC Chief of Nursing/Patient Care Services
David Henderson, CC Deputy Director for Clinical Care
Collaborators: Medical Executive Committee
Senior Administrative Officers
Nurse Managers
Members of key support areas, e.g., Social Work, Nutrition, Materials Management.
Purpose/Goal: To develop a new “team-based” model of governing and managing patient care units. The new model will
partner a nurse manager, a lead Institute representative(s), and an administrative officer to conjointly manage a multi-Institute unit assuring all patient care, research support, and operational requirements are met. Admissions criteria and policies will be developed for each patient care area to assure appropriate match between patients, protocol requirements, and caregivers to maximize efficiencies and inpatient utilization.
Scope: With the opening of the CRC in early 2003, the number of PCU’s decreases from 22 to 13. Units will be shared among Institutes requiring a new model of team-oriented management and joint governance. PCU’s must be managed and supported by programs of care rather than by Institute. Stakeholders from each of the 13 PCU’s in the CRC will be assembled with a member of the CC leadership team to develop a model for patient care unit governance. The basic model of governance is depicted below, but can be modified by PCU “partners” to take into account special programmatic requirements.
