What Should I Bring With Me?

You should bring clothing (leisure, underclothing, appropriate clothing for the type of vocation you anticipate to be in, a warm jacket, sweaters, sweat suits for after work hours, leisure shoes, a warm coat), personal hygiene items, a towel, a wash cloth, a watch, an umbrella and an alarm clock.

Also bring the following:
* Immunization records
* Copy of your GED or HS Diploma & Transcripts are very helpful
* Social Security Card
* Copy of birth certificate
* Driver's License
* Name/Address/Phone # of at least 3 contact people (in case of emergency) and
* A COMMITMENT TO COMPLETE YOUR EDUCATION!

What will the Center Provide?

The center will provide bed linens, blankets, a pillow, a bedspread. We also provide laundry detergent and sanitary items for women.

Can I purchase personal items, snacks, etc on campus?

Yes. The Student Government Association provides a student store, snack bar and vending machines for your convenience. The student store sells many products, including personal hygiene products, phone cards, drinks and snacks, and much more.

What Should I Leave at Home?

Do not bring music amplifiers, large home or portable stereos, expensive jewelry, or clothing with alcohol, drug or gang related messages, clothing that does not meet center dress code standards (See Dress Policy on this site). No drugs/alcohol. No weapons. No pornography. No pets.

Can I earn High School credits or a Diploma?

YES! Loring Job Corps Center is an accredited State of Maine High School. It is helpful if you bring a copy of your high school transcript or if you've obtained a GED, your GED certificate and transcript.

Can I get a job off center?

Yes, on weekends and during evening hours as long as you meet the center's expectations and the job doesn't interfere with your required center responsibilities and training. Specific requirements must be met to secure and maintain a job while at Loring Job Corps Center.

May I attend Church?

Yes. There is transportation available to all area churches.

Can I go shopping? To the mall?

Yes. There are several stores and restaurants in the local area. The Aroostook Center Mall is located in Presque Isle, which is about 30 minutes ride from the center. Buses are provided after work and on weekends to travel to the local area.

Can I bring my car?

No. Students who live on the center are not allowed to have vehicles at the center.

What is the smoking policy?

Smoking is allowed outdoors in designated areas only. If you are under 18 years of age, Maine law mandates that you are not allowed to smoke.

Can my parents, family or friends call or visit me?

Yes. Each dormitory has student telephones available for use after the workday. Family members are welcome to visit on center anytime after the workday or on weekends, but are required to check-in with the community safet office.

What happens during weekends or holidays?

This is typically your time, however, there are certain required activities or duties during these times. If you meet performance expectations, you usually can go on pass away from center, or go home. You will most often need to provide your own transportation.

What does the dorm room look like?

Loring has 2 dormitories which vary slightly in size and layout. Each room has two occupants with attached bathroom and shower facilities that are shared with the adjoining room. Each dorm has laundry rooms, vending machines for snacks, TV rooms, and lounge areas.

Can I watch TV in my dorm room and can I bring a TV?

Yes. Every room has free cable television, as well as television in the dormitory lounges. Due to limited space and power constrants, TVs cannot be larger than 13 inches.

Is there a curfew?

Yes. On work nights you will need to be in your dorm by 9:30pm except Stewardship nights(usually Thursdays) by 8:00pm; on weekends you will need to be in your dorm by 1:30am. Lights-out is 10:30pm on weekdays and not a requirement on weekends, but you must remain in your own room.
