Pembina, North Dakota — U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers here apprehended Emelda Marie Reimer, 24, of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Friday afternoon, December 7, 2007. Reimer, a Canadian citizen, arrived at the Pembina port of entry around 12:30 in the afternoon with three friends headed to Green Bay, Wisconsin, for a NFL football game. This apprehension was the direct result of CBP’s queries during primary inspections at border crossings.

Questioning by CBP officers upon arrival identified Reimer as a person of interest to Canadian authorities. Additional queries and questioning revealed the alleged robbery charges. Working closely with Canadian authorities, CBP officers were able to determine that the subject was in fact wanted for robbery and Winnipeg Police Department detectives were notified. Reimer was refused entry into the United States and subsequently turned over to Canadian authorities and arrested.

The subject was wanted for allegedly stealing $35,000 in cash from credit unions in Canada between July and December of 2007. During each of the robberies, the suspect allegedly concealed her identity wearing a disguise. Reimer has been charged in Canada with four counts of robbery, two counts of robbery with a weapon and six counts of wearing a disguise.

“This apprehension is the direct result of Customs and Border Protection’s vigilance in identifying subjects of interest and working closely with foreign officials in the apprehension of criminals” said Mary Delaquis, CBP area port director. “CBP efforts at the border result in safer communities throughout the United States.”

Customs and Border Protection is the unified border agency within the Department of Homeland Security charged with the management, control and protection of our nation's borders at and between the official ports of entry. CBP is charged with keeping terrorists and terrorist weapons out of the country while enforcing hundreds of U.S. laws.
