Annotation: SUGGESTIONS FOR PREVENTING THEFT OF BOATS AND MARITIME EQUIPMENT PRESENTED IN THIS AUDIOCASSETTE INCLUDE MARKING VALUABLES WITH IDENTIFICATION NUMBERS.
Abstract: BECAUSE BOATS AND SAILING GEAR ARE VALUABLE ASSETS, THEY ARE ALWAYS LIKELY TARGETS FOR THEFT. AN ACCURATE INVENTORY OF ALL EQUIPMENT WHICH SHOULD INCLUDE RADIOS AND BINOCULARS, WITH SERIAL NUMBERS AND MODEL NUMBERS, WILL BE USEFUL FOR INSURANCE PURPOSES. PHOTOGRAPHS OF THE BOAT SHOULD BE TAKEN FROM ALL SIDES AND ANGLES, AND THE BOAT NUMBER ENGRAVED RATHER THAN PAINTED ON THE VESSEL. THE BOATOWNER SHOULD ALWAYS TAKE THE REGISTRATION PAPERS WITH HIM WHEN EVER THE BOAT IS STORED. IN STORAGE, THE BOAT SHOULD BE LOCKED IN SUCH A WAY THAT THE TRAILER CANNOT BE USED IN ANY ATTEMPT TO STEAL THE BOAT. LOCKS AND CHAINS SHOULD BE OF HIGH QUALITY. TIRES MAY BE REMOVED FROM THE TRAILER WHILE IN STORAGE, AND THE SPARE TIRE SHOULD BE STORED SEPARATELY. BOATHOUSES OUGHT TO HAVE STRONG, PADLOCKED DOORS, WITH CHAINS PLACED ACROSS THE SLIP OF THE BOAT CHANNEL. THE KEYS SHOULD ALWAYS BE REMOVED FROM THE IGNITION, AND THE BATTERY SWITCH SHOULD BE TURNED OFF. IF A BOAT IS STOLEN, THE POLICE SHOULD BE IMMEDIATELY INFORMED; THE COAST GUARD MUST ALSO BE NOTIFIED. MARINA STAFF SHOULD BE ENCOURAGED TO MAKE FREQUENT SECURITY INSPECTIONS. GOOD LIGHTING OF DOCK AREAS IS CONSIDERED IMPORTANT TO CRIME DETERRENCE. VANDALISM MAY BE DISCOURAGED BY HATCH LOCKS, STRONG HINGES, AND WINDOW BOLTS. THEFT OF EQUIPMENT AND MOTORS CAN BE DETERRED BY REMOVING THESE ITEMS WHEN NOT IN USE, AND BY CONCEALED STORAGE. NEIGHBORHOOD WATCHES ARE RECOMMENDED. (TWK)
