HRSA Awards More Than $5.3 Million for
Medical Training in Geriatric Care

The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) has announced new grant awards of $5.3 million to improve the ability of health professionals to better diagnose and treat elderly Americans.

“To care for our nation’s elderly -- and the soon-to-be seniors of the baby-boom generation – we need more health professionals who can address their specific and unique medical needs,” Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy G. Thompson said. “Grants like these are important to America’s health in the 21st century.”

The FY 2002 grants are funded under two programs administered by HRSA’s Bureau of Health Professions:

  • Geriatric Education Centers train health professions faculty, students and practitioners in diagnosis, treatment, disease prevention, disability, and other health problems of the aged. The program supports training involving four or more health professions, one of which must be allopathic or osteopathic medicine. This year’s grants total more than $4.5 million and go to centers in 12 states. Since 1985, 375,000 health professionals have received training in geriatrics through the HRSA-funded centers.
  • Geriatric Training for Physicians, Dentists and Behavioral/Mental Health Professionals funds training for health professionals who plan to teach in their respective disciplines. Trainees participate in a variety of service rotations such as geriatric consulting services, acute care services, dental services, geriatric behavioral and mental health units, day and home care programs, rehabilitation services, extended care facilities, and geriatric ambulatory care. Two awards, worth more than $780,000, go to grantees in California.
