ILS implementation information note no. 9
21 August 1997

I offer my apologies for taking so long since the last information note.  When I started to distribute information notes I envisioned that they would come out once every month or so, but I haven't kept up. We have kept very busy here at the NOAA Central Library trying to adjust the system so that it better serves our needs and "note no. 9" kept getting delayed.

In this issue ...

STILAS SESSION DURING IAMSLIC CONFERENCE IN CHARLESTON
We will hold a session for NOAALIN librarians during the week of the IAMSLIC Conference in Charleston SC this fall. Many West Coast librarians have told me that they would more likely attend this session than any other.  The conference runs from 5-9 October; we have not yet decided on the exact day, although the tentative schedule seems to favor a Tuesday afternoon time for 2-4 hours.  The time will also depend in large part upon your preferences.  If a particular day that week looks better for you than any other please relay that information to me.

The Coastal Services Center Library will graciously host the session at their training facilities.  We should have computers for everyone to use and a connection to the Charleston server.  I hope to have some informational handouts to share with you as well.

I assume that everyone will want to discuss the NOAALINC system and I have based the following tentative outline on that premise.  We can also cover items unrelated to NOAALINC if folks want to--just let me know:

I.   Creation of NOAALINC Catalog--how our catalog evolved, how we decided on this system, how we decided to "build the catalog" from the old Bibliofile catalog, etc.
II.  Cataloging for the NOAALINC--how the system organizes its database, what you need to put into your record (949 tag), what happens to your records,
III. Web-based Catalog (WebCat)--how to search the database, viewing options, qualifying searches, other stuff (Z39.50, hours, patron services, etc.)
IV.  Future "enhancements"--version 9  (we now have version 8), etc.

If you have something you want to bring up or learn about, please give me a call/email/whatever to let me know even if it is already on the schedule.  If you don't want to hear about something, let me know that, too.  Meanwhile stay tuned for further details.

CATALOGUER'S TOOLBOX ON THE WEB
We have discovered an excellent website for catalogers called the Cataloguer's Toolbox.  The URL is http://134.153.2.153/library/cat/index.html.  The site contains a wealth of information for catalogers in a well-organized web page with links to other sites.  The site includes MARC formats; MARC codes for countries and languages; cataloging tools from LC, the Library of Canada, and OCLC; and many more items too numerous to mention.  If you haven't already seen it take a look.

SEND IN YOUR RECORDS--SEND IN YOUR DELETIONS--SEND IN YOUR CHANGES
We continue to load records from most of the NOAALIN libraries thru the export and ftp process.  We have also deleted a large number of records from a weeding project at the MASC Library in Boulder.  Remember that if you wish to delete or change any of your records you must send an e-mail to the Central Library with a list of records.  The list should include OCLC control number, title, and what you wish to have done (deletion or modification).

If you haven't yet sent any records in and need assistance, call Stanley and he will gladly give you more information than you could possibly need.
