WINTER WHEAT

Montana farmers seeded 2.6 million acres of winter wheat in 2008, up from the 2.24 million acres seeded the previous year. Montana ranks fourth in the United States for seeded winter wheat acreage, up from the fifth spot in 2007. The top four winter wheat varieties account for 48.9 percent of the state's total acreage.

Genou is the top winter wheat variety planted in Montana for the second year in a row. Farmers planted 513,200 acres of the variety or 19.7 percent of the total winter wheat acreage. The variety was released by Montana State University in 2004. Genou is a solid-stem, hard red winter wheat with enhanced yield potential and cold tolerance in comparison to Rampart. Test weight, maturity, height, and protein qualities are similar to Rampart and Vanguard varieties. Genou is resistant to the wheat stem sawfly.

CDC Falcon is the second most planted variety this year for the third year in a row. A total of 348,800 acres were planted to the variety or 13.4 percent of the state's total acreage. CDC Falcon is a semi-dwarf, hard red winter wheat developed by the Crop Development Center in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and was registered in 1998. It is a high yielding wheat with a short strong straw, good winter-hardiness, and a resistance to stem and leaf rust. This variety has shown average to above average yields on dryland and good performance for irrigated fields.

Yellowstone rises from the eleventh most popular winter wheat variety last year to the third most common variety in 2008. It accounts for 8.4 percent of the state's planted acreage with 218,400 acres seeded. Yellowstone is a hard red winter wheat developed by the Montana Agricultural Experiment Station and released in 2005. The variety is very high yielding with medium test weight, maturity, height, and grain protein. It has excellent baking quality and good noodle quality. It is moderately resistant to dwarf smut and stripe rust but is susceptible to stem rust.

Rampart falls from the third most common winter wheat variety planted in 2007 to the fourth most common seeded in 2008 with 189,900 acres. It accounts for 7.3 percent of the state's planted acreage. Rampart is a hard red winter wheat developed by the Montana Agricultural Experiment Station and released in 1996. It is an awned, red-chaffed, solid-stemmed variety. Kernels are hard red, with a mid-sized germ. Rampart is resistant to the wheat stem sawfly and to prevalent races of stem rust. It is susceptible to stripe rust, leaf rust, dwarf smut, and the Russian wheat aphid. Rampart has excellent milling and baking qualities.

SPRING WHEAT

In 2008, there were 2.5 million acres of spring wheat planted in Montana, keeping the state ranked at second for highest acres planted. In 2007, 2.45 million acres were planted. The top four spring wheat varieties account for 63.3 percent of all Montana's spring wheat acreage.

Reeder is the top spring wheat variety planted this year with 620,100 acres planted or 24.8 percent of all spring wheat planted in Montana. This is the third year in a row this variety has been at the top of the list. Reeder was developed by the North Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station and released in 1999. Reeder is an awned, semi-dwarf, hard red spring wheat resistant to upper Midwest stem and leaf rust. It was developed from a cross of a relative of Stoa and germplasm from Brazil. Its stay-green trait allows for a longer grain-fill period and a higher yield.

Choteau is the second most common variety this year with 564,700 acres planted or 22.6 percent of Montana's spring wheat acres. It was the second most common variety last year also. Choteau was developed by the Montana Agricultural Experiment Station in 2003. It is a semi-dwarf, hard red spring wheat with solid stems which lends tolerance to the wheat stem sawfly. The spike is lax and tapered with white awns and glumes. Kernels are red ovate with a medium crease and brush. Choteau is resistant to the prevalent stem rust in Montana and is tolerant to the Hessian fly. Yields are similar to McNeal in Montana.

McNeal is ranked third for the second year in a row with 294,300 acres planted or 11.8 percent of all acres seeded. McNeal was developed by the Montana Agricultural Experiment Station and released in March 1995. It is a semi-dwarf, hard red spring wheat with red chaff and tan straw. The variety is moderately resistant to lodging and to prevalent races of stem rust and wheat streak mosaic virus. It is somewhat susceptible to leaf rust and stripe rust, and is also fairly vulnerable to Russian wheat aphid and the wheat stem sawfly. McNeal has shown above average yields similar to Reeder and Choteau.

Fortuna rises from being the fifth most planted variety in 2007 to being the fourth most common in 2008. A total of 103,000 acres or 4.1 percent of Montana's spring wheat crop is seeded to the variety. Fortuna was developed by the North Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station and the USDA's Crops Research Division. It is beardless with white chaff and straw. It has a solid stem which is resistant to the wheat stem sawfly, but it is susceptible to Septoria and black chaff fungus. The variety is high yielding and has superior milling and acceptable baking properties.

DURUM WHEAT

Durum wheat acreage increased from 480,000 acres planted in 2007 to 610,000 acres planted in 2008. Montana is still ranked the second highest in durum wheat acreage in the nation. The top four durum wheat varieties make up 69.8 percent of Montana's durum wheat acreage.

Kyle is in second place again this year for the fifth year in a row. There were 86,000 acres seeded in the state, accounting for 14.1 percent of the state's total acres. Kyle was developed by the Agriculture Canada Research Station in Swift Current, Saskatchewan and released in 1984. Kyle is resistant to leaf and stem rust. It is moderately susceptible to tan spot and Septoria leaf spot and susceptible to loose smut. Kyle has the highest tolerance to color-loss from rainfall.

Strongfield rises from the tenth most common durum variety last year to the third most common in 2008. A total of 51,100 acres or 8.4 percent of Montana's durum acreage is planted to the variety. Strongfield was released by Ag Canada in 2004. It is medium in height and maturity. It has good resistance to leaf and stem rusts but is only moderately resistant to common bunt. The variety exhibits good end use qualities by having high protein, low grain cadmium concentration, high yellow pigment, and a moderately strong gluten content.

Alzada is the fourth leading durum wheat variety seeded for the third year in a row with 48,800 acres planted or 8.0 percent of Montana's durum wheat acreage. Developed by WestBred, LLC and released in 2004, Alzada is a semi-dwarf, sawfly tolerant, non day-length sensitive variety. It produces a bright yellow semolina from which high quality durum products can be made. This variety has an early maturity date and shows high yields with average test weights.
