Research and Development Center, Wooster, OH Pedigree: Lennox / Ardenne Reference(s): 32, 406 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Registration of Champ Spelt (Reg. No. 728). H. N. Lafever 'CHAMP' spelt (Triticum aestivum L. var. spelta f. sp. T. spelta L.), PI 502974, (Reg. no. 728) was developed by the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center, The Ohio State University, Wooster, OH, and officially released in 1986. It was selected from a cross of WW1011-1/'Ardenne'. WW1001-1 is a selection from 'Mironovskaya 808' winter wheat, a Russian cultivar. Ardenne is a European spelt cultivar. Selection pressure was applied to this wheat/spelt cross to retain the desirable traits of the wheat parent, but return to the spelt phenotype. Spelt, previously considered to be a separate species of Triticum, has more recently been classed as a subspecies of common wheat. Champ was first selected as an F2 plant and reselected in the F9 generation. Breeder seed consisted of the bulked progeny of 25 F9 plants selected for uniformity in 1983 and 1984. The release of Champ is the first known release of an improved spelt cultivar for production in the Midwest. All currently grown acreages apparently are seeded to cultivars introduced from Europe or Asia near the turn of the century. Champ has been tested in trials at three locations in Ohio from 1981 through 1985 and at two locations in 1986. In these tests, Champ averaged 25% higher in yield than common spelt over 17 location-yr (3292 vs. 2636 kg ha-1). The common spelt used in these trials originated as the highest yielding spelt line from dozens collected on farms throughout Ohio in the early 1970s and entered in yield trials. Known as 'Purified Common Spelt', it has been the only source of certified spelt in Ohio and has been available since 1976. The true origin of the cultivar is unknown. Champ is apically awnletted and brown chaffed with square to elevated glume shoulders. Glumes are narrow and long with obtuse beaks. Upon combine harvesting, the rachis typically breaks at each node while most spikelets remain wholly intact. Narrowing of cylinder clearance results in increasing occurrence of whole, free florets with the kernel intact and an increase in free or naked kernels. Kernels are large, red, long, and elliptical in shape, often misshapen. Brush is large, long, and noncollared. Kernel crease is usually deep with angular cheeks, often wide and/or misshapen. Champ is slightly taller than common spelt (130 vs. 125 cm), but has superior straw strength, averaging 11% lodging in 14 location-yr in Ohio compared to 43% for common spelt. Winterhardiness of Champ appears equal to common spelt, but is superior to most popular wheat cultivars in Ohio. Heading date of Champ is 1 d earlier than common spelt. Percent protein of Champ has average 11.7% while common spelt average 10.5%, a relatively important trait because spelt is commonly used as an alternative to spring or winter oat as a feed grain. Foliage is dark green. Champ possesses resistance to leaf rust (caused by Puccinia recondita Rob. ex. Desm. f. sp tritici), but only moderate resistance to powdery mildew (caused by Erysiphe graminis DC. f. sp. tritici E. Marchal). It also is very resistant to wheat spindle streak virus (WSSM) and has exhibited good field resistance to loose smut [caused by Ustilago tritici (Pers.) Rostr.]. Application for protection under the Plant Variety Protection Act is planned. Breeder seed of Champ will be maintained by the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center, The Ohio State University, Wooster, OH 44691. Published in Crop Sci. 28:377-378.
