A Discovery Lesson for Preschool Children - Books and Videos

What is a Bird, by Ron Hirschi. This book defines the characteristics of birds.

Planes and Other Flying Things - Paper Magic, by Florence Temko. A fun book with photographs and simple directions for making objects from paper that fly.

The Wright Brothers for Kids, by Mary Kay Carson. A comprehensive resource for teachers that includes the history of how the Wright Brothers invented the airplane and 21 activities exploring the science and history of flight.

Tales of the Shimmering Sky, by Susan Milord. Ten global folktales with activities links weather (rain, clouds, wind, etc.) to the past. Story related activities investigate the science of the shimmering sky, as well as cultures, arts and crafts, cooking, math, games, and history.

Kites: Magic Wishes that fly up to the sky, by Demi. A beautiful presentation of the special history of kites that blends storytelling with fact to reveal the time-honored traditions behind kite flying. Includes illustrated directions for making and decorating magic kites.

Air is all around you, by Franklyn M. Branley. An excellent simple explanation of the characteristics of air and simple experiments that prove that air is all around you.

The Wright Brothers at Kitty Hawk. A "This is America, Charlie Brown" video which places Charlie Brown and all his friends at the Historic Flight of the Wright Brothers in Kitty Hawk, 1903.

The Magic School Bus Taking Flight. In a series of high adventures, the students in Ms. Frizzle's class personally discover how wings and moving air cause flight.

Kids' Paper Airplane Book, by Ken Blackburn, Jeff Lammers. This book provides patterns for younger children that are complete with dotted lines for folding.

Lisa's Airplane Trip, by Anne Gutman, Georg Hallensleben. Lisa, an adorable little white dog with expressive black eyes is traveling alone by airplane, from Paris to New York, and has many adventures along the way.

How Does the Wind Blow? (I Wonder Series), by Andrew Langley, Stuart Trotter. A very informative book to help kids learn about the environment.

The Wondrous Whirligig: The Wright Brothers' First Flying Machine, by Andrew Glass. A book for young children about the Wright Brothers and their invention.

Can You See the Wind? (Rookie Read-About Science), by Allan Fowler. Relates physical characteristics of the wind.

Fortunately, by Remy Charlip. Good and bad luck accompany Ned from New York to Florida on his way to a surprise party.

Elmer Takes Off, by David McKee. An elephant that flies? Elmer, the patchwork elephant, sets out to prove that an elephant simply can't be blown away, even in the strongest wind—but he's in for a big surprise!
