The Foundation, founded in 1967, is working to eradicate ileitis (Crohn's Disease) and ulcerative colitis through programs of research and education. The foundation conducts a nationwide coordinated research program aimed at finding the causes and cure of these chronic intestinal diseases. The Foundation produces public service announcements and programs to educate the public concerning inflammatory bowel disease. Patient education programs are designed to convey essential health information to patients and their families. Activities directed at the education of health care professionals include medical seminars, publications, and educational exhibits at medical conventions to provide information on recent developments in the diagnosis and treatment of these diseases. The Foundation supports both basic and clinical research efforts through research grants and research training awards. There are 72 local chapters. Crohn's Disease and ulcerative colitis, diseases of the intestines, are estimated to affect two million Americans.
The Foundation publishes several pamphlets and three books for patients and consumers on these diseases. Serial publication: Newsletter, quarterly--information on research developments and national and local organizational news. The Crohn's and Colitis Forum on the Prodigy Computer Service offers comprehensive information and on-line communication with physicians and other specialists.
