This germplasm is desired for breeding programs for crop improvement, is extremely poorly represented in other germplasm collections, and can only be obtained by collection. The germplasm will be incorporated into the National Plant Germplasm System. AP: The germplasm will be collected from Southeastern Virginia, eastern North Carolina, southern Arkansas and southern Tennessee, the panhandle of Florida, and all of South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Three-fourths of each seed accession will be deposited with the NCGR, Corvallis. The remaining one-fourth will be retained at NC State University for germination and evaluation for disease, pest, adaptation and horticultural traits. Elite genotypes from these screenings will be deposited with NCGR, Corvallis, and the remainder discarded. PR: 9503 TO 9512 Collections of Fragaria virginiana were made in Georgia, South Carolina, Louisiana, and Mississippi. A total of 105 seed and clonal accessions were collected. In addition to Fragaria virginiana, collections were made of several species of Rubus, Vaccinium, and Gaylussacia. Collections have been deposited with the National Germplasm Repository in Corvallis, Oregon where they will be available to breeders and researchers attempting to develop improved strawberry cultivars. The collection of Fragaria virginiana in the southeastern states will continue next year. IC: 002972 SU: Region 2 (Southern).
