The following is  a  release  by  the  United  States  Geological
Survey,  National  Earthquake  Information Center:  An earthquake
occurred about 135 km (85 miles) NW  of  Gorontalo,  Sulawesi  at
10:02 AM MST today, Nov 16, 2008 (Nov 17 at 1:02 AM local time in
Indonesia).  A PRELIMINARY MAGNITUDE OF 7.5 WAS COMPUTED FOR THIS
EARTHQUAKE.   The  magnitude  and  location  may  be revised when
additional data and further analysis results are  available.   No
reports  of damage or casualties have been received at this time;
however, this earthquake  may  have  caused  damage  due  to  its
location  and  size.   Earthquakes  of  this type sometimes cause
tsunamis, however the USGS has  no  information  that  an  actual
tsunami  has  been  generated.   For  information about tsunamis,

for earthquake of 2008 Nov  16,  MINAHASA,  SULAWESI,  INDONESIA,
about  135  km  (85  miles) NW of Gorontalo, Sulawesi, Indonesia:
latitude 1.3 degrees north, longitude 122.1 degrees east,  origin
time 17 02 31.7 utc, depth shallow, magnitude 7.5.  The magnitude
and location may be revised  when  additional  data  and  further
analysis   results  are  available.   No  reports  of  damage  or
casualties  have  been  received  at  this  time;  however,  this
earthquake  may  have caused damage due to its location and size.
Earthquakes of this type sometimes cause  tsunamis,  however  the
USGS   has  no  information  that  an  actual  tsunami  has  been
