Ambassador and Mrs. John welcome the cast of the world famous Broadway musical Chicago
On February 11, Ambassador and Mrs. John welcomed the cast of the world famous Broadway musical Chicago to their residence for an afternoon reception and high tea. Among the talented cast in attendance were Michelle DeJean, who plays the sassy Roxie Hart; Terra MacLeod, who steps on stage as vampy Velma Kelly; and Jeff McCarthy, who takes on the role of fast-talking Billy Flynn. Also joining were Roz Ryan (Mama Morton), Ben Elledge (Amos Hart), Dan Micciche (Mary Sunshine), and the rest of the Chicago cast members, who all expressed excitement at being in Bangkok for the musical’s first tour in Thailand. Following a warm welcome from Ambassador John, during which he noted that Chicago is one of the most successful productions in Broadway, “Roxie” and “Velma” razzle-dazzled the guests with a preview of the musical talent that awaits Chicago audiences here in Thailand. A great time was had by all!
The musical Chicago opened in Bangkok on February 12 at the Muang Thai Rachadalai Theatre, thrilling fans with its high energy and heady action. The show will run until Sunday, February 22. For more information on tickets, please visit www.thaiticketmajor.com.

Ambassador and Assistant Secretary for Consular Affairs Connect via Digital Video Conference with Students from Bangkok and Southern Thailand
On February 5, 2009, Media and Cultural Section of the U.S. Embassy sponsored a digital video conference (DVC) event with American Corners at Pattani, Yala and Nakhon Si Thammarat. U.S. Ambassador Eric G. John gave a presentation describing the importance of the Presidential Inauguration. Throughout his speech, Ambassador John related the struggle of African Americans in the early years to the success of President Barack Obama. Later in the program, Assistant Secretary of State Janice L. Jacobs joined the Ambassador and talked about studying in the U.S as well as Visa matters. The audience was composed of over 50 university students from Chulalongkorn, Thammasat, Kasetsart and Kasem Bundit Universities in Bangkok, plus approximately 100 students and teachers attending via DVC. The program ended with lively Q & A session where are special guests fielded questions from the eager group of participants.

First Thai-American Nominated as the Assistant Secretary of Veterans Affairs
On February 3, President Obama announced his intention to nominate Thai-American Ladda Tammy Duckworth to be the Assistant Secretary of Public and Intergovernmental Affairs for the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). As Assistant Secretary, Duckworth – who currently serves as Director of the Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs – will direct VA’s public affairs, internal communications and intergovernmental relations. Ambassador and AMCHAM Welcome Prime Minister Abhisit to a Talk with the American Business Community in Thailand
U.S. Ambassador Eric John and the American Chamber of Commerce in Thailand welcomed Prime Minister Abhisit and his economic team to an in-depth briefing on the current economic situation in Thailand held on February 3 at the Grand Hyatt Erawan Hotel in Bangkok. Over 600 representatives from the American business community in Thailand attended the event, in which an additional 50 representatives from U.S. companies joined the session via video conference from Washington, D.C. Underscoring the long and close relationship that the United States share with Thailand, Ambassador John remarked, “The fact that we have such a large business community and embassy presence here speaks to the strength of the connection between the U.S. and Thailand. 2009 Thai-U.S. Friendship Painting Day Exemplifies Unity in Diversity
On February 3, Ambassador and Mrs. John opened the 2009 Thai-U.S. Friendship Painting Day hosted by the Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy. This special event brought together more than 85 students and faculty from eleven local schools to paint their concept of this year’s theme — E Pluribus Unum — or “out of many, one.” Other honored guests present at the event were Director General Nongnuth Phetcharatana from the Department of American and South Pacific Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and renowned Thai art critic, Ajarn Thanom Chapakdee.
