The month averaged much warnier than normal except in New Mexico, where it was notably cooler hi the Rio Grande Valley. In Texas it was esce tionally warn, extreme western Texas to over 6' above in tlie northern portion of tlie State. The precipitation wu9 decidedly deficient in Texas, but averaged greater than norniiil in New Mexico and Colorado. So far ns Texas is concerned this was the driest and warmest June in the last 24 years, and considerable damage resulted from the drought ancl heat. The drought was qparently severest in tlie northern, west-central, and soutliwesteni portions of the State. Good rains occurred,. however, over limited areas in extreme west Texas and in the estxeme up ,er const counties. The moisture was generally well d is- tributecl in Colorado and New Mexico, where tlie number 2 and most ercentage of sunshine was unusually high east of the &io Pecos and averaged below normal in the west.ern ortions of tho district. Thunderstorm occurred with Ess than the usual frequency and there were relatively but few severe local st,orms. The greatest and least monthly amounts of precipitn- tion in Colorado were 3.76 inches at Platoro and 0.29 inch a t Blanca; in New Mesico, 3.50 inches crt Harvey's Up er Ranch and a trace at Laguna; and in Texas, 9.20 other stations the amounts were too sniall to be meas- ured. Excessive precipitation of 3.50 inches or riiore in 24 consecutive hours occurred at 2 stations in Tesiw. the mean temperature ranging from a B out nornial in more of precipitation averaged number of days inc K es a t Anahuac and none a t 13 stations, while at 6 TEMPERATURE. Tlie mean tern erat-ure avera ed 1.7' above the nornial Texas. As a rule, the days wcre warm atid the nights relatively cool. Maxiniuni temperatures of 100' or more were recorded in New Mexico on and after the 23d, while in Texas they wererecorclecl as early as tlie 1st. Tlie average daily range of temperature varied from 9' on the upper Texas coast to 38' in the extreme northwestern portion of the district. The highest ancl lowest temper- atures reported were: In Colorado 88' at Garnett on t,he 4th, and 22' a t Hermit on the 4th; in New Mexico 105' at Hondo Reservoir on the 25th and at Carlsbaci on the 25th and 26th, ancl 27' a t Bluewat.er on tlie 2d; ancl in Texas 112' a t Haskell on the 23d and a t Baistow on the 24th, and 54' a t Marathon on the 1st and at Fdfurrins on tlie 7th. The local monthly means ranged from 51.6' to 61' in Co1orado;from 55.4b to 79.8' in New Mexico, and from 74.6' to 89.8' in Texas. in Colorado, 0.8' \ elow in New a lexico, and 3.6' above in PRECIPITATION. The precipitation over tlie Rio Grande watershed ex- ceeded the normal over the upper half and was decidedly deficient. over the lower half. The average for the entire clrainnge nren was 1.13 inches, which is over 50 per cent more than reported for May or for tlie month of tho previous year. The grentest cipit-ation was 3.32 inches at Valentine, was very little or no preci itation at any of the Tcxas stations froni Del Rio to L f nno Grande. The avera e precipitnt, ion for the Rio Pecos watershed was 1.11 inc 7 ies, which is the same as the amount. re- orted for tlie corresponding month of the previous year, Lit muc.~i less tlian tmliatn reported for ~a locnlities the monthly aniouiits esceede 8' tlie In normal, but over the great.er lortion of the drainage area there WRS a deficiency whic \ i W'RS niost conspicuous over the Testis stretch. The greatest monthly recipitntion was 3.50 inches at Harvey's Upper Ranch, ?! Mex., and there was none at Grand Falls, Tex. The Texas watersheds showed a dicidecl deficienc of preci itation which was most pronounced over the hue- 7 ces gainage area. In this area the heaviest montldy amount was on1 0.05 inch and 78 per cent of the report- iiig stations ha 9 cither no precipitation or the amounts were too sniall to be metmured. Similar c.ondit, ions existed over limited areos in tlie upper and middle por- tions of the Colornclo and Rrazos, 111 the upper portions of the Sabine, arid in t.he lower coastal plains. The tleficiency WRS oeneral, esc.ept near the extreme upper cotist,, where fieavy rains occurred. "lie Ileaviest niontlilv amount reported wits 9.20 inches ut Anahuac. The fo'llowing are the average monthly amounts, in inches, for the various watersheds: Nueces, 0.01; San Antonio, 0.45; Guatlalupe, 0.63 ; Lavaca, 1.96; Colorado, .0.60; Brazos, 0.73; Trinity, 1.02; Neohes, 1.57; Sabine, 0.36; and coastal plains, 1.90. These amounts are about 1.25 inches less than those reported for May and 0.99 inch less than those for tlie corresponding nionth of the previous year. ' RIVER CONDITIONR. There was aniple water in both the Rio Grande and Rio Pecos for irrigation and storage. The Rio Grande espec.ially disrha.rged a. large volunie of wa tm during tlie month; in fact, the volume was the largest for June in the last 5 years.. - The Tesas streams, which showed a decided deficiency of water a t the closb of May, continued unusually lo+ during tlie month. The stages reported are the lowest on record for June, ancl there was a scarcity of water for the irrigation of rice fields. 910 MONTHLY WEATHER REVIEW. JUNE, 1911 MISCELLANEOUS. Glorieta Runch, N. IRRIGATION IN TEXAS. The bledina Irrigation Co. has begun the c.onstruc.tioii of B dam across the Medina River, a tributary of the San Antonio River, about 12 miles north of Castro- ville. The dam will be 160 feet high and 1,360 feet long and will be the largest in the State of Texas. A tract of 13,824 acres will be placed under irrigation, which will ultimately be increased. To facilitate the work of construction a railroad line is being built from the Southern Pacific Railroad a t Dunlay to the site of the dam, a distance of 25 miles. The St. Stephen Land & Irrigation Co. is building IL dam about 12 miles south of Marfa, Tex., across Alamita Creek, which drains into the Rio Grande. The dam is nearing completion and will irrigate 9,000 acres. The reservoir site comniands a drainage area that is precipi- tous at the outer rim; being bounded by mountrtlns that rise to a height of several thousand feet. The dam is constructed of reinforced concrete and is composed of two sections with the face wall supported by buttresses, which are triangular in shape, the u stream edge being inclined at an angle of 45' and the ownstream ed e a t an angle of 12O. Both buttresses and face. wal are securely trenched into solid rock. The dam will be six times stronger than necessary to s u p r t the pressure against it.
