1. In der Fremde (In foreign lands)

Da ruhe ich auch, und über mir	When I too shall rest, and over me
Rauscht die schöne Waldeinsamkeit,	the beautiful forest's loneliness shall rustle,
Und keiner kennt mich mehr hier.	And no one here shall know me anymore.

2. Intermezzo (Intermezzo)

Dein Bildnis wunderselig	Your blissful, wonderful image
Hab ich im Herzensgrund,	I have in my heart's depths;
Das sieht so frisch und fröhlich	it looks so freshly and joyously
Mich an zu jeder Stund.	at me in every moment.

Das in die Luft sich schwinget	that soars into the air

3. Waldesgespräch (Conversation in the wood)

Was reitest du einsam durch den Wald.	why do you ride alone through the wood?
Der Wald ist lang, du bist allein,	The wood is vast and you are alone,

So reich geschmückt ist Roß und Weib,	So richly decked are mount and lady,

4. Die Stille (Silence)

Es weiß und rät es doch keiner,	No one knows or guesses
Wie mir so wohl ist, so wohl!	how glad I am, so glad!
Ach, wüßt es nur einer, nur einer,	Alas, if only one could know it, just one -
Kein Mensch es sonst wissen soll!	no other soul should know it!
So still ist's nicht draußen im Schnee,	The snow outside is not so quiet -
So stumm und verschwiegen sind	nor as mute and silent
Die Sterne nicht in der Höh,	are the lofty stars,
Als meine Gedanken sind.	compared with my thoughts.

Die Erde still geküßt,	Had quietly kissed the earth,
Daß sie im Blütenschimmer	So that in a shower of blossoms
Von ihm nur träumen müßt.	She must now dream of him.
Die Luft ging durch die Felder,	The breeze wafted through the fields,
Die Ähren wogten sacht,	The ears of corn waved gently,
Es rauschten leis die Wälder,	The forests rustled faintly,
So sternklar war die Nacht.	So sparkling clear was the night.
Und meine Seele spannte	And my soul stretched
Weit ihre Flügel aus,	its wings out far,
Flog durch die stillen Lande,	Flew through the still lands,
Als flöge sie nach Haus.	as if it were flying home.

6. Schöne Fremde (Beauteous foreign land)

Es rauschen die Wipfel und schauern,	The treetops rustle and shiver
Als machten zu dieser Stund	as if at this hour
Um die halbversunkenen Mauern	about the half-sunken walls
Die alten Götter die Rund.	the old gods are making their rounds.
Hier hinter den Myrtenbäumen	Here, behind the myrtle trees,
In heimlich dämmernder Pracht,	in secretly darkening splendor,
Was sprichst du wirr wie in Träumen	what do you say so murmuringly, as if in a dream,
Zu mir, phantastische Nacht?	to me, fantastic night?
Es funkeln auf mich alle Sterne	The stars glitter down on me
Mit glühendem Liebesblick,	with glowing, loving gazes,
Es redet trunken die Ferne	and the distance speaks tipsily,
Wie vom künftigem, großem Glück.	it seems, of great future happiness.

7. Auf einer Burg (In a castle)

Eingeschlafen auf der Lauer	Asleep on his watch
Oben ist der alte Ritter;	up there is the old knight;
Drüber gehen Regenschauer,	above move rainshowers,
Und der Wald rauscht durch das Gitter.	and the wood rustles through the grill.
Eingewachsen Bart und Haare	Beard and hair grown into one,
Und versteinert Brust und Krause,	chest and ruff have turned to stone;
Sitzt er viele hundert Jahre	he sits for many hundreds of years
Oben in der stillen Klause.	above in his silent den.
Draußen ist es still' und friedlich,	Outside it is quiet and peaceful:
Alle sind ins Tal gezogen,	all have taken to the valley;
Waldesvögel einsam singen	woodbirds sing alone
In den leeren Fensterbogen.	in the empty arching windows.
Eine Hochzeit fährt da unten	A wedding passes by below
Auf dem Rhein im Sonnenscheine,	on the Rhine, in the sunlight:
Musikanten spielen munter,	musicians play gaily
Und die schöne Braut, die weinet.	and the fair bride - she weeps.

8. In der Fremde (In a foreign land)

Ich hör' die Bächlein rauschen	I hear the brooklets rushing
Im Walde her und hin.	here and there in the wood.
Im Walde, in dem Rauschen,	In the wood, amidst the rushing,
Ich weiß nicht, wo ich bin.	I know not where I am.
Die Nachtigallen schlagen	The nightingales sing
Hier in der Einsamkeit,	here in the solitude,
Als wollten sie was sagen	as if they wanted to speak
Von der alten, schönen Zeit.	of fine old times.
Die Mondesschimmer fliegen,	The moonbeams dart
Als säh ich unter mir	and I seem to see below me
Das Schloß im Tale liegen,	a castle lying in the valley -
Und ist doch so weit von hier!	yet it is so far from here!
Als müßte in dem Garten,	It seems as if, in the garden
Voll Rosen weiß und rot,	full of roses white and red,
Meine Liebste auf mich warten,	my sweetheart were waiting for me -
Und ist doch so lange tot.	yet she is long since dead.

9. Wehmut

Ich kann wohl manchmal singen,	Sometimes I can sing
Als ob ich fröhlich sei,	as if I were happy,
Doch heimlich Tränen dringen,	but secretly tears well up
Da wird das Herz mir frei.	and free my heart.
Es lassen Nachtigallen,	The nightingales,
Spielt draußen Frühlingsluft,	when spring breezes play, let
Der Sehnsucht Lied erschallen	their songs of yearning resound
Aus ihres Kerkers Gruft.	from the depths of their dungeons.
Da lauschen alle Herzen,	Then all hearts listen
Und alles ist erfreut,	and everyone rejoices;
Doch keiner fühlt die Schmerzen,	yet no one truly feels the anguish
Im Lied das tiefe Leid.	of the song's deep sorrow.

10. Zwielicht (Twilight)

Dämmrung will die Flügel spreiten,	Dusk prepares to spread its wings,
Schaurig rühren sich die Bäume,	the trees rustle ominously,
Wolken ziehn wie schwer Träume -	clouds approach like heavy dreams -
Was willst dieses Grau'n bedeuten?	what does this horror mean?
Hast ein Reh du lieb vor andern,	If you have a favorite roe,
Laß es nicht alleine grasen,	don't let it graze alone;
Jäger ziehn im Wald und blasen,	hunters roam the forest, sounding their horns,
Stimmen hin und wieder wandern.	their voices straying time and again.
Hast du einen Freund hienieden,	If you have a friend on earth,
Trau ihm nicht zu dieser Stunde,	do not trust him in this hour;
Freundlich wohl mit Aug' und Munde,	friendly might he seem in eye and mouth,
Sinnt er Krieg im tück'schen Frieden.	yet he plans for war in deceitful peace.
Was heut gehet müde unter,	What today goes wearily down,
Hebt sich morgen neu geboren.	will lift itself tomorrow newly born.
Manches geht in Nacht verloren -	Much goes astray at night -
Hüte dich, sei wach und munter!	beware - be alert and wide awake!

11. Im Walde (In the wood)

Es zog eine Hochzeit den Berg entlang,	Beside the mountain there passed a wedding party.
Ich hörte die Vögel schlagen,	I heard the birds singing;
Da blitzten viel Reiter, das Waldhorn klang,	then there blazed past many knights, their forest horns sounding.
Das war ein lustiges Jagen!	It was a merry hunt!
Und eh ich's gedacht, war alles verhallt,	And before I could think about it, all had died away
Die Nacht bedecket die Runde,	and the night threw a cloak around.
Nur von den Bergen noch rauschet der Wald	Only from the mountains did the wood yet rustle,
Und mich schauert's im Herzensgrunde.	and deep in my heart I shudder.

12. Frühlingsnacht

Über Garten durch die Lüfte	Above the garden and across the sky
Hört ich Wandervögel ziehn,	I heard migrating birds passing;
Das bedeutet Frühlingsdüfte,	that meant that spring was in the air;
Unten fängt's schon an zu blüh'n.	below, things are already beginning to bloom.
Jauchzen möcht ich, möchte weinen,	I could rejoice, I could weep -
Ist mir's doch, als könnt's nicht sein!	I feel as though it cannot be!
Alte Wunder wieder scheinen	Old wonders appear again
Mit dem Mondesglanz herein.	with the moonlight.
Und der Mond, die Sterne sagen's,	And the moon and stars say it,
Und im Traume rauscht's der Hain,	and in a dream the grove murmurs it,
Und die Nachtigallen schlagen's:	and the nightingales sing it:
Sie ist deine! Sie ist deine!	she is yours! She is yours!
