Harry Melanson

In Memoriam
1956 - 2004

Dear Colleagues,

I have just learned of the passing of Harry Melanson. I am profoundly shocked and saddened by this unexpected event. Harry was my student at Michigan State University and wrote a first rate thesis on an experiment studying lambda and anti-lambda polarization in hadronic collisions. In many ways he was the ideal student combining a deep understanding of the physics with a high level of technical expertise in electronics and software. He was a highly independent and original thinker and I was happy to note that his early promise led to increasingly important leadership roles at Fermilab and particularly within D0. Harry was a good friend and valued colleague and I am at a loss for words to express my sense of loss at his passing in the middle of a life so full of accomplishment and future possibilities. I join with all my colleagues in D0 and the larger community in expressing my deepest sympathies to Harry's family at this difficult time.

Our colleague, community member and lunchtable compatriot,
is absent today.
Our mentor, who guided us with wisdom and patience,
is lost.
Our neighbor, knowledgeable, always handy and helpful,
has gone away.
Our friend, from whom we learned decency and with whom we shared,
is not.

We scientists ask why,
what has happened?
Was this preventable
By a change of variable?
But there will be no answers that brace us.
Logic fails.
More analysis is not required.

Did you know that Harry kept score of baseball games
the same way he did so for golf?
He counted pitches, the number and order
of balls and strikes,
And marked the angle and distance
of hits and outs,
Like keeping score of strokes.

Moseying. Beautiful.
