Project Number 279
Date of Summary December 29, 1998
Subject Assessment of the Feasibility for the Application of Threaded Connectors in Offshore Platform Caissons
Performing Activity Southwest Research Institute (SRI)
Principal Investigator Martha Q. Smith
Contracting Agency Minerals Management Service
Estimated Completion Complete
Description The project assessed the feasibility of using threaded connections for offshore platform caissons in shallow water. This study included a literature review and a survey of current practice in the use of threaded connectors. Factors considered in the use of threaded connections for caissons offshore included: installation loads, in place loads, life cycle loads, and decommissioning loads.
Progress A literature review and a survey of current industry practices have been completed. After completing this effort, SRI replaced the Project Manager and revisited the scope and timing of the project with MMS. SRI and MMS agreed that continued assessment of standard threaded designs was not productive because new, proprietary thread designs would likely be used for this application. The scope was revised to include a more thorough review of existing code guidelines to establish any deficiencies with regard to structural capacity of the new threaded connections and certification of caisson structures. The final report provided MMS with guidance on what to require from any future applicant who proposes to use such connections. SRI completed a second, more extensive survey of operators and caisson design. From this information, SRI determined that industry currently has little interest in using threaded connections for caissons and for continuing with Phase II of the project. The report also identifies what additional work and information would be needed when a company proposes to use threaded connections in caissons.
