NEWS RELEASE (95-95) September 7, 1995 Steven Pennoyer 11:45 p.m. 907-586-7221 For Immediate Release NMFS ANNOUNCES AVAILABILITY OF DRAFT MARINE MAMMAL VIEWING GUIDELINES This past summer, the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) has received numerous complaints about the possible effects of wildlife viewing on humpback whales, Steller sea lions, and harbor seals. NMFS wishes to remind the public that all marine mammals are protected under Federal law, and that pursuit and other types of harassment of these animals is prohibited. To aid the public in enjoying wildlife viewing without causing harm to marine mammals, NMFS Alaska Region has developed guidelines for vessel operation in the vicinity of these animals. These draft guidelines are now available for public review and comment through October 31, 1995. NMFS plans to release final guidelines prior to the start of next year's tourist season and is considering local public meetings to discuss boating practices and area-specific concerns. Individuals interested in obtaining a copy of the draft guidelines may contact NMFS at 907-586-7235 or NMFS, Protected Resources Management Division, P.O. Box 21668, Juneau, AK 99802.
