Ia-crop-weather State Iowa Crops & Weather Released April 11, 2005 Week Ending Date April 10, 2005 Issue IA-CW1505 Spring Fieldwork Progresses Agricultural Summary: Predominately warm, dry conditions enabled farmers to make strides in spring fieldwork activities. Field work activities included applying anhydrous, disking or leveling corn stalk residue, tilling and planting oats. A few areas reported corn planting, but the overall state average was negligible. There were 5.3 days suitable for fieldwork, compared to the previous week at 3.5 days. Topsoil moisture rated 3 percent very short, 17 percent short, 76 percent adequate, and 4 percent surplus across Iowa. Subsoil moisture rated 2 percent very short, 16 percent short, 76 percent adequate, and 6 percent surplus. Soil moisture ratings were similar to last week and compared to a year ago. Field Crops Report: Oat seedings were 73 percent complete, ahead of both last year's progress of 57 percent and the five-year average of 46 percent. Oat emergence, at 9 percent, was above both last year and the five-year average. A few areas reported corn planting, but the overall state average was negligible. Primary seedbed preparations were 55 percent complete, while fertilizer applications were 73 percent complete. Livestock, Pasture, and Range Report: Calving was well under way with few losses. Favorable weather conditions during calving made for a smooth calving season. Pasture and range condition rated 3 percent very poor, 10 percent poor, 31 percent fair, 50 percent good, and 6 percent excellent. Pasture and range condition improved from the previous week. Some areas reported cattle turned to pasture. Iowa Weather Summary It was exceptionally mild week across Iowa with temperatures more typical of late May than of early April. The past work week began with daytime highs mostly in the low 80's on Monday (4th) and in the 70's on Tuesday (5th). On Sunday (10th) highs were in the low 70's northwest to low 80's southeast. Temperatures for the week as a whole averaged 15.3 degrees above normal. Temperature extremes varied from Monday (4th) afternoon highs of 83 degrees at Glenwood, Iowa City and Pocahontas to a Friday (8th) morning low of 28 degrees at Anamosa. Showers and thunderstorms covered most of the southeast one-half of Iowa on Wednesday (6th) while locally heavy rain also affected a small portion of far northwest Iowa. Another period of showers and thunderstorms began Sunday (10th) morning in northwest Iowa and was moving across central portions of the state by daybreak on Monday (11th).
