June

1 The French Frigate Shoals tagging operation celebrates its Silver Anniversary on June 1, 1998. Since 1973, research conducted there has revealed much about the mating, nesting and migratory habits of the Hawaiian green turtle.

The tagging of turtles at the French Frigate Shoals is a marvelous success story. The number of nesting females continues to grow steadily as the honu population struggles its way back to recovery.

They've had plenty of help along the way, thanks to the dedicated team of researchers and volunteers at the both Federal and State levels.

For more information please visit the Turtle Trax French Frigate Shoals -- 25th Anniversary Web pages at: http://www.turtles.org/ffs25.htm and drop by the French Frigate Shoals Today Web page at: http://www.radiojerry.com/ffstoday.htm

GET YOUR FEET WET - HAWAIIAN STYLE

Get your feet wet surfing Hawaii's marine world at
www.soest.hawaii.edu/SEAGRANT. Online information via the Web is available
on Sea Grant Extension Service, Research, Communications, National Sea Grant, SOEST, and "Sea Squirt" for Kids. "Tidal Topics" announces current news and events (e.g., Open Ocean Aquaculture 98 Call for Papers with a link to Texas Sea Grant).

The Online FADs Program, which debuted in February 1998, provides fishermen in Hawaii daily updated online access to information on the State's fish aggregation devices used to attract pelagic fishes and thus improve fishing.

"Sea Squirt," Sea Grant online for kids, used coral reefs as a focus of its prototype. Plans are in the works for further curriculum development for grades K-12.
