Statement of Significance (as of designation - June 23, 1986):
The USS Monitor (1862), famous for her Civil War battle with CSS Merrimac, was the prototype of a class of ironclad, turreted warships which significantly altered both naval technology and marine architecture in the 19th century. Designed by Swedish engineer John Ericsson, the vessel contained all of the nascent innovations which helped to revolutionize warfare at sea.

In 2002, the Landmark was granted $100,000 from Save America's Treasures to conserve the engine, cannon, gun carriages and other components of the Monitor that are at Newport News.
