Gastropoda - Snails

Lymnaeidae - dextral pond snails

Previous - Hydrobidae
Browse Gastropod Families
Next - Physidae

Key to Lymnaeidae

Acella haldemani courtesy of UM

Acella haldemani

long, slender, almost needle-like shell reaching almost 1 inch (25 mm) high and only 0.2 in (5 mm) wide

Fossaria parva

Fossaria spp.

Adult shell 3-13 mm, turreted, nearly always without spiral striae and without a columellar plait; outermost shell layer color horn, tan or brown.

Lymnaea caperata

Lymnaea

Adult shell length 30-
53 mm, thin and fragile, spire long and narrow; columella with a strong plait (interior spiral appears braided); outermost shell layer color horn to tannish-horn.

Stagnicola catascopium

Adult shell 14-20mm, elongate-ovoid with a pointed spire.
It has 6 whorls and a light brown to light greenish grey color.

Radix auricularia
Radix auricularia

Adult shell 35mm high and 20mm wide, last whorl elate and broadened to an ear's shape.

The shell is light or dark-brown, a little bit reddish. The animal is yellow with black spots.

Lymnaea columella

Pseudosuccinea columella

Adult shell length 10-22 mm, succiniform - having a thin and fragile shell that has a large oval body whorl with a large shell aperture and a small spire. The surface sculpture consists of microscopic, spiral, raised, periostracal striae.

Outermost shell layer color yellowish-horn to olive-tan. The head, foot and mantle vary from light yellow to black.
