University of Connecticut--Dr. Robert Pomeroy, Associate Professor of Agricultural and Resource Economics at the University of Connecticut, and Connecticut Sea Grant Fisheries Extension Specialist, is at the U.S. Embassy in Bangkok, Thailand, meeting with Thai government officials planning how best to assist fisheries communities impacted by the recent devastating tsunami.

Dr. Pomeroy, who was in The WorldFish Center in Penang, Malaysia, was contacted by the U.S. State Department and NOAA National Ocean Service, and asked to assist with recovery efforts in Phuket, where he will travel on Wednesday (Jan. 19). Dr. Pomeroy was last in Phuket, Thailand, in November 2004, working with fishing communities on the development of new cooperative fisheries management strategies.

Before joining the University of Connecticut in 2002, Dr. Pomeroy worked at the World Resources in Washington, D.C., where he helped to develop a marine program. Dr. Pomeroy is an expert in marine resource economics and policy, specifically small-scale fisheries development and management, international development, policy analysis, marine protected areas, and seafood marketing. He has worked on projects in more than 40 nations, primarily in Asia, Africa, the Caribbean, and Latin America.

Dr. Pomeroy and his wife are residents of Mystic, Connecticut. To learn more, visit Connecticut Sea Grant at: http://www.seagrant.uconn.edu/tsunami.pdf
